Books And Bears Are Ready For Story Hour

The Pratt Memorial Library in New Milford is pleased to announce it has recently received a grant from the Libri Foundation. The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new children's books to small, rural public libraries through its Books For Children program. Just in time for the summer story hour programs at Pratt, the Libri Foundation grant enabled the library to obtain 63 new children’s books. In the past 21 years, the Foundation has donated more than $5.25 million worth of new children's books to over 3,000 libraries in all 50 states. The Foundation partners with local donors, matching their gifts on a 2-to-1basis from $50 up to $350.

Thanks to many generous individuals, the library in New Milford was able to receive the largest grant available from Libri. Pratt Memorial Library’s summer librarian, Laura VanCott, selected the 63 books from the Foundation's 700-title booklist.

To celebrate the new books, there will be a special story hour at the library on Main Street in New Milford on Saturday June 16th at 1:00. The regular summer story hour will begin on June 25th at 1:00 and continue each Monday until August 6th.

To learn more about the story hour programs at Pratt Memorial Library, call 570-465-3098 or see their website at http://prattmemoriallibrary.org/ The new books (as well as many great older ones!) will also be available during regular library hours which are Monday 2 to 5, Wednesday 2 to 7, Friday 6:30 to 8:30 and Saturday 2 to 5.

For additional information on the Libri Foundation or to make a donation, see their website at http://librifoundation.org/.

Harford Fair Expands Fine Arts Department

You may be asking why would there be articles about the Harford Fair now when the fair isn’t until August 20-25 this year. The fair wants the community to know that this year there will be some changes made to the Fine Arts Department which includes photography, paintings, crafts, glass, ceramics, scrapbooking, and woodworking. This is a very large department and has been crowded for years.

Delores Decavage, originally from Lenoxville, proudly displays her embroidered blanket which she received for the Superintendent’s Award in the Fine Arts Department at last year’s Harford Fair. She is 90 years old and has been entering items in the fair since she was a young girl.

The superintendents of that department are in the final stages to move the crafts, glass, ceramics, scrapbook, and wood-working section to a new location. Because the interest in Bingo has waned for the past few years, the board of directors has decided to discontinue Bingo and to utilize the building for the crafts that have been a long time part of Harford Fair. New classes will also be added and a display by Lackawanna College about the gas industry here in Susquehanna County. There will also be more room for scheduled community members to provide demonstrations to fair goers. As a result, the building will be divided so that the crafts from the Fine Arts Building can be displayed there. This then will also provide more room in the Fine Arts Building to display the 3 amount of paintings and photography to be displayed in a more visually appealing way.

In addition to having more room, Katie Ezdebski, superintendent of the Fine Arts area which will be moved, is pleased to announce that there will also be new categories added to the listing. These include the following: Card making and embossing, Ink stamping, Jewelry, Carved objects, Embellished lamp shades, Pierced relief of round objects, Functional original car, plane, and boat models, Wood turning and Furniture and functional items made from utilizing recycled materials.

Julie Davenport, co-superintendent in the Fine Arts Department announces additional changes to the painting and photography area which include: Digital enhancement-any photograph digitally altered, any subject, any color - your imagination is your limit and Poster size-any subject, any color. Size not to exceed 16"x 20" (for Child, Youth, Adult and Professional ).

A full listing of the departments, rules, classes, and entry blanks can be found on the Harford Fair website harfordfair.com. Start planning your projects now as winter is upon us. Then plan to enter some of your fine work to be displayed and judged at the 2012 Harford Fair. It is the community which makes for the wonderful displays at the fair. The deadline for the submission of entry forms is August 1, 2012.
