BR Superintendent Gets Package

Bracketed by a pair of executive sessions, the gathering of the Blue Ridge School Board on October 24 encompassed a brief business meeting and a similarly brief workshop. According to Board president Alan Hall, the executive sessions covered on-going and related personnel and legal matters that might be “determined at the next meeting.”

The major item on the short business agenda was a compensation package for Superintendent Robert McTiernan. Details were not provided, but there was an additional item listed as a “compensation adjustment.” Mr. Hall said that the entire package offered Mr. McTiernan a somewhat lower salary increase following his first successful year as Superintendent, in exchange for a longer-term contract, extending to 2014.

During the workshop, Mr. Hall accepted responsibility for the delayed installation of new playground equipment donated by the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). He said he would put together a team the following weekend to review the large instruction manual for the structure and get started. He said that by doing it locally, the PTO could save as much as $13,000 over vendor-provided installation.

Mr. Hall said that work on the playground was delayed because he has been working on the ballfield in New Milford. Vicki Drake gave the Board a report on progress restoring that facility.

Business Manager Loren Small reported that the major projects covered by the $2 million contract with Johnson Controls are nearly complete. He said that a payment of some $315,000 awaits final signoff. The project is expected to pay for itself over a number of years through state subsidy and improved energy efficiency. A number of the larger items were considered capital expenditures that would have had to be done eventually.

Several Board members attended a major state school boards conference recently and reported to their colleagues some of what they saw and heard. Mr. Hall, for example, said he learned of innovative fund-raising ideas that he hopes will work at Blue Ridge. He suggested that the Board itself could sponsor some of these initiatives. He showed a plaque he had received at a business meeting at the conference recognizing his service as north-east regional representative to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA), the lobbying organization of the state’s 501 school districts.

Mr. Hall read parts of a release by the county United Way recognizing a donation of $1,650 collected by the Blue Ridge Education Association (BREA), the teachers’ organization.

Christina Cosmello, chair of the Athletics and Activities Committee reported that the district is still looking for a coach for the 8th-grade boys basketball team. Interested?

Joel Whitehead, the Board’s representative at the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit #19 (NEIU 19, or “the IU”) reported that the IU’s board still has not selected a new executive director to replace Fred Rosetti, whose generous compensation and retirement packages have caused some consternation in the area.

Cindy Gaughan said that the next meeting of her Wellness Committee would be on November 3 to review the group’s focus on nutrition, physical education and mental health. The health fair that was often held at Blue Ridge in the Autumn will be staged at Montrose this year, on November 19, sponsored in part by the Area Agency on Aging.

The next meeting of the Blue Ridge School Board is expected to be on November 7, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria in the Elementary School. Check the district website for up-to-date information.
