Library, Historical Society Meeting This Saturday

The Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association's annual meeting will be held this Saturday, November 5, at 2 p.m. The meeting will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Hall, Montrose. The President of the Board of Directors, the Administrator/Librarian, and committee representatives will report on the Association's progress and activities during 2011. Delicious refreshments will be served.

In the past, the annual meeting was held in January, but it is moving to November due to a proposed change in the bylaws. The new bylaws will be voted on at the meeting. They are available for review at www.susqcolibrary.org/bylaws or at your library location.

After the business portion of the meeting, the entertainment portion will feature a presentation by Jeffrey Marshall, Chief Preservation Officer of the Heritage Conservancy. He will talk about the new Montrose Historic District, and answer questions residents and homeowners may have.

Mr. Marshall has been involved in historic preservation and land conservation for 30 years. He has helped document, photograph, and research over 15,000 old buildings and protect over 5,000 acres of open space. He has taught at the Bucks County Community College where he serves on the Historic Preservation Program Board of Advisors. Mr. Marshall has been a regular presenter at the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference as well as numerous other state and regional conference. In addition to serving as the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the National Barn Alliance he serves on the Historic Barn and Farm Foundation of Pennsylvania board.

The annual meeting marks the start of the support drive for 2011. You should have received an envelope, brochure, and support card in the mail, but forms are available at the libraries or online at www.susqcolibrary.org/support. Your donations help provide library service across Susquehanna County and support the county museum and genealogy research center.

Everyone is invited to come enjoy the free program and learn more about the Association. For more information, visit www.susqcolibrary.org or call 570-278-1881.

Mountain View To Host Veteran’s Day Extravaganza

This year, Veteran’s Day will fall on the unprecedented and very special date of 11/11/11 where all the 11’s will march in a true line for the first time since the signing of the Armistice in 1918. Mountain View High School is planning a special event in honor of this special occasion. On November 9, at 7:00 p.m., Mountain View will present a patriotic music revue featuring its senior chorus, jazz vocal group, and junior high band.

Veterans from the area are being invited to share in the evening’s presentation in many capacities. Lt. Col. David J. Palmer, a Mountain View graduate now working in the Pentagon, will be the keynote speaker. Several of our local veterans will be attending in uniform. The color guard will be accompanied by the band as they enter to present our colors for the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the posting of the colors for the evening’s concert. The history of the bugle and a demonstration of several bugle calls will be presented by a Mountain View senior. Also, a special seat is being reserved in honor of the absence of our MIA/POW soldiers.

The vocal ensemble and senior chorus have prepared an array of patriotic numbers designed to bring rise to our pride in “America,” bring honor and recognition to those who serve and to recall the sense a unity that our military have all experienced as portrayed by the ensemble’s musical call to action, “Seize the Day!” Several other band and choral numbers will be in the concert line-up as well. The evening’s program will conclude with a “Tribute to the Armed Services,” offering recognition to representatives from each of our military branches.

All are invited to share in an evening of music, patriotism and appreciation of our servicemen and women as we celebrate this very special Veteran’s Day. Admission to this event is free; donations are optional. Mark November 9 on your calendar, and don’t miss your chance to honor our veterans!
