SCFLOA Plans Foliage Bus Tour

The 2011 Susquehanna County Forest Landowners Association (SCFLOA) annual Columbus Day weekend foliage bus tour will head to central Pennsylvania, the Williamsport area. Forestry, natural history and historical chronicles highlight the theme of this year’s bus tour. SCFLOA President Jim Kessler states “with Mother Nature’s cooperation the Pennsylvania hardwood forests should dazzle us with their peak colors.“

The first stop will be at the Penn College Earth Science Center where Forest Technology is taught. The college has 3 outdoor laboratory sites which are used as experimental forests, where various woodland thinning and harvesting techniques are practiced. The facilities include a 4000 sq. ft sawmill and about 785 acres of timber between 10-80 years of age, which are being actively managed by the college and the students. A 2-acre pond and recreation fields compliment the outdoor facilities.

The second stop on the tour is the world famous Clyde Peeling’s Reptileland. Reptileland will give participants a chance to observe and learn about snakes, lizards and turtles in their natural habitat. The group will be able to view hundreds of butterflies in flight as they amble through their native butterfly greenhouse. As an added bonus, participants can walk among the extinct reptile cousins in the “Dinosaurs Come to Life” exhibit.

The final stop will be at the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society. This facility chronicles the history of our region from American Indian occupation through 20th century industry and life. Exhibits include an American Indian gallery, a Fine and Decorative Arts gallery, 19th century period rooms and the Shempp Model Train exhibit, featuring over 300 toy trains.

The tour will leave the parking lot behind the County Office Building in Montrose promptly at 8 am. on Monday, October 10. If you have any questions please call Stuart Slocum at 756-2497 or Jim Kessler at 879-4604. Reservations for this trip must be made by September 24.

QDMA To Host PGC Deer Talk

Jim Stickles, Biologist and Field Crew Leader of the Deer & Elk Section of the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC), will be the featured guest speaker at the next event of The Susquehanna Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Jim Stickles will talk about the 3rd and final year’s efforts to learn more about whitetail deer, deer dispersal, deer lives through the season and what he and his crew of biologists, volunteers and landowners are currently doing.

According to Jim he is still monitoring radio collared deer activities. He explains about one specific deer - "the Montrose deer that moved to Loyalville last year is still alive, and he was recently captured on trail cam! He’s a little sparse up top in terms of antler development, but he was repeatedly mistaken as a doe last year, indicating he hardly had any antlers at all as a yearling. When we captured this deer, it was a very small button buck. I suspect he was a little bit behind the rest of his cohorts in terms of growth, and making 2 movements of about 20 miles in the same year probably didn’t help him from an energy conservation standpoint.”

This will be one of Jim's final talks about deer trapping, as he is soon headed to the University of Georgia to do graduate work with Dr. Karl Miller.

The Susquehanna Branch will also be showing their new DVD which features several of the branch directors talking about what people can do to make better wildlife habitat out of new gas pipeline and well pad areas.

The talk is scheduled for September 24 at 7 p.m. at the Inn at Montrose. For more information call Bob Wagner at 278-1011, ext. 108 or 278-9363.
