St. Paul’s To Host Music Festival

St. Paul’s To Host Music Festival

The first annual Susquehanna Summer Music Festival will be in residence at Historic St. Paul’s Church, Montrose, from Tuesday, August 16 through Saturday, August 20.

The festival will feature the talents of four talented soloists - Amy Marie Rood, soprano, a native of Montrose and the daughter of Peter and Therese Quigg of St. Paul’s (Amy sings professionally in New York City); Dr. Donald Callen Freed, a tenor, who is both a conductor and composer (Donald is the head of choral activities at Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas); Thomas Welch, a tenor, who is a native of the area and sings in the area; and Bryan Jackson, a baritone, who sings professionally in the Washington, D.C. area.

Tuesday, August 16 at 7 p.m. will feature a Hymn Festival, “When in our music God is glorified,” featuring the premiere of a newly composed hymn-anthem by Dr. Freed, written for the people of St. Paul’s. On Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m., the four guest soloists will present a “Liederabend,” an evening of song, accompanied by Randy Webster. On Friday, August 19 at 7 p.m. will be a Bach Cantata Festival featuring the performance of cantatas #51 and #5. And Saturday, August 20 at 2 p.m. will feature Handel’s oratorio “Judas Maccabaeus.” All of the events will be free to the public.

While the four guests are here, Susquehanna County students will have the opportunity to study with them and sing for them at no charge. Students wishing to sing for the artists are asked to contact St. Paul’s at 570-278-2954.
