Blueberry Festival This Weekend

The 2011 Blueberry Festival will take place Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Village Green and Library Lawn in Montrose. The Blueberry Festival celebrates hometown living at its finest. Blueberries in every form from ice cream to pies, games for children and entertainment for all ages, a silent auction, food, fun, and crafts, all draw thousands of visitors every year. Proceeds from the festival help operate the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association, which serves the county with a museum and genealogy research center, a main library and three branches, and Books-By-Mail and Books-On-Wheels.

Varied entertainment is scheduled for the Festival - schedules will be posted on the Green and in the Library. On both days, visit an authentic Civil War camp at the Monument. Poor Boys/Living History Guild re-enactor Brian Swartz will answer questions about a soldier's day-to-day life. On Friday, Joe Welden and Scott Zimmerman will play standards at 10 a.m., followed by the Endless Mountains Theatre Company at 11, the Windwood Hill Dance Academy at noon, singer-songwriter Corky Staats at 1:30 p.m., and more songs from Kelly & Susan Pratt at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, Noelani's Hula School and Polynesian Revue is scheduled to bring the music and dance of the islands to Montrose at 10 a.m. Storyteller and musician Mary Baker will take the stage at noon. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, visitors can also take horse-drawn wagon rides from the Frontier parking lot (just south of the Green).

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, don't miss the annual massed band concert. The concert will bring back the good old days of the 1930s when Maurice Taylor assembled an audience of ten thousand in Montrose to enjoy great traditional music. Organizer Johanna Reed is conducting, with special guests. Bring a chair and enjoy the show.

The book sale is bigger than ever, with 25,000+ books arranged in categories. There are four areas this year: three tents on the Green, for children's books, fiction and non-fiction hardcovers, and antiquarian/collectible/coffee table books, plus the former Liberty Carpet location behind Montrose Sporting Goods will house most paperbacks, music and video, multi-volume sets, and religious books. In support of local churches, all religious books are free! There will not be any bag sale or giveaway this year, and barcode scanners are not allowed.

The Children's Games will keep your youngsters entertained for hours! There are skill games for the youngest, and other activities for older children. Everyone loves face-painting.

Each year a local group makes an heirloom quilt to be raffled off at the Festival. The Magic Needles Quilt Guild designed a Blueberry Stars pattern this year. The popular Basket Raffle will also be bigger and better than ever. Another event that grows continuously is the White Elephant Sale. On Friday, there will be collectibles and jewelry for sale, and on Saturday the countless treasures that have been donated will fill the top of the Green.

In conjunction with the festival, Salt Springs State Park will offer tours on Friday at noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.; the Penn State Master Gardeners will have a program on low-maintenance gardening at the fountain on the Green at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. both Friday and Saturday; and the United Fire Company is holding a Spaghetti Dinner starting at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Fire Hall, so you can go home with supper in hand.

"Every year, the Blueberry Festival continues to grow and improve!" says Susan Stone, Administrator/Librarian of the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association. "It's really wonderful how our community pulls together to make the festival possible. Local businesses and individuals contribute time, supplies, advertising, and everything else that's needed, to help support the Library and Historical Society. I hope everyone will come and enjoy the Blueberry Festival with us on the 5th and 6th!"

For more information about the Blueberry Festival or the Library and Historical Society, please call 570-278-1881 or visit www.montroseblueberryfestival.org.
