Luke Kavka Named Outstanding Scholar

ROCHESTER, NY - Luke Kavka, son of Joseph and Debra Kavka of Kingsley, was recently named a 2010-2011 Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar at Rochester Institute of Technology. Luke, an applied networking and system administration major, is a graduate of Mountain View Junior/Senior High School.

Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship Awards are presented to students who have achieved the distinction of maintaining a minimum university grade point average of 3.85 out of a possible 4.0 and completed at least 125 quarter credit hours of study, nearly two-thirds of the credit hours required for a baccalaureate degree. Each RIT scholar receives a bronze medallion representing the traditional symbols for wisdom and respect-the Athenian owl and the olive branch.

BR Students Compete In Stock Market Game

A team from Blue Ridge High School was recognized for their expertise and knowledge of the stock market in the 2010-2011 Stock Market Game conducted by The Honesdale National Bank Center for Economic Education at The University of Scranton.

Pictured (l-r) above are Mike Williamson, vice president of Prudential Trust Co.; William Schweighofer, president of Honesdale National Bank; team members Katherine Conklin, Zachary Kruger, Brooke Wallace and Thomas Shelanskey, Blue Ridge High School; and Alicia Ross, team advisor. Absent from photo is team member Wesley Guthrie.

The Stock Market Game is a ten-week simulation during which students from three grade categories (4-6, 7-8, 9-12) invest an imaginary $100,000 by buying stocks listed on the major securities exchanges. Students who compete in the game learn how financial markets operate and hone their mathematics and decision making skills. Separate ten-week competitions are held in the fall and spring. Team rankings are based on final portfolio values. The University of Scranton hosts one of the Pennsylvania Centers for Economic Education, each of which conducts its own Stock Market Game competition.

Teams that finished first, second and third in their grade categories (fall and spring) from the area served by the Honesdale National Bank Center for Economic Education at The University of Scranton Center were recognized at a recent awards ceremony. A team from Blue Ridge High School finished third at the 9-12 grade level in the spring competition with a final portfolio worth $112,021.
