St. Paul’s To Observe Consecration Anniversary

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Montrose has announced their observance of the anniversary of its consecration on Sunday, July 17. The building was consecrated by Bishop Potter, Bishop of Pennsylvania, on July 17, 1857 during a four-day series of services and religious programs. The festive Eucharist to mark the occasion will be held at 9:00 a.m. The Rev’d Paul Walker, Rector of St. Paul’s, will officiate and preach at the festival Eucharist.

The current building at 276 Chestnut Street is the second building to be occupied by St. Paul’s, which was chartered in 1831. The building was designed by Richard Upjohn (1802-1878), the foremost American ecclesial architect of the mid-19th century. Upjohn designed the building in what is sometimes called the “country Gothic” style, with a tower and spire in the northeastern corner. The woodwork in the building is solid oak, fashioned by William Boyd of Montrose, a local builder who was one of the contractors for the Susquehanna County Court Building. The church is lighted with a number of beautiful windows, the three in the front of the building from the studios of Louis Tiffany.
