Richard Guiton Ninth In Nation

In Washington DC over Memorial Day weekend, Elk Lake debater Richard Guiton made team history at the National Catholic Forensics League’s Grand National Tournament by placing 9th in the nation, out of 211 competitors, in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Guiton, during the preliminary rounds, compiled an undefeated record of 5 wins and 0 losses. Over the course of those 5 preliminary rounds, only three of the 15 judges that Guiton saw gave him a loss.

As a result of his preliminary record, Guiton earned a spot in the elimination rounds of the top 32 debaters in the country as the 4th seeded debater.

In the Double Octa-Final Round, the round of 32, Guiton defeated Thalia Frasco from Unatego Central School in Albany, NY and advanced to the Octa-Final Round.

In the Octa-Final Round, Guiton faced Keni Sabath from Saint Agnes High School in Houston. Guiton lost a 3-0 decision and, as a result of his loss, placed 9th in the country.

“This was a simply incredible performance by Ricky (Guiton) this weekend. This tournament was the culmination of a season of hard work and dedication to excellence on his part,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious who, due to a family emergency, was forced to spend the weekend at home while assistant coach Dr. Kurt Liebegott accompanied the team to Washington DC.

“Dr. Liebegott did a great job preparing and working with Ricky (Guiton) both before and during this tournament. He deserves a great deal of credit for helping Ricky get that far at such a hugely competitive tournament,” continued Brosious.

In 2007, EL senior Molly Copeland also compiled an undefeated preliminary round record and placed 9th at NCFL Nationals in Houston.

Guiton, only a junior, will be returning next year for his senior season at Elk Lake.

Summer Reading Fun At Susky Elementary

Students at the Susquehanna Community Elementary School kicked off their third annual summer reading challenge with “Read at the Beach.” The “Catch the Reading Wave” reading incentive challenges students to read and report on at least three books during the summer. Over 1500 books are donated each year through a variety of sources. This year the school was also fortunate to receive a monetary donation from the Lions Club that was used to purchase books for students. Students at the elementary building are provided with three books of their choosing and a level appropriate packet to complete and return to school for incentives.

Research has shown that children need to read during the summer months to avoid the “summer slump” which could mean an academic loss of as much as three months! The local librarian can offer more suggestions that might be a good match for your child's interests and reading

Authentic reading experiences can be found in daily routines. Children can read during car trips, at the park, at the beach, or while waiting for an appointment. Reading recipes, using the phone book, reading the television listing in a local newspaper, looking for information on the internet, reading directions for using a new gadget, and reading a brochure or article about a potential summer travel destination can all provide reading experiences.
