PHEAA Offers Help In Completing FAFSA HARRISBURG - Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) informs residents that the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is offering free completion sessions for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), including one workshop on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Keystone College. The sessions are being held across the state from January through April for students and families interested in qualifying for financial assistance during the 2011-12 academic year. PHEAA offers the FAFSA sessions in partnership with the Pennsylvania Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. A schedule of upcoming FAFSA completion sessions is available http://www.pheaa.org/plan_for_college/fafsa/index.shtml and will be updated weekly as additional locations are confirmed. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students and families will have the opportunity to ask questions related to the FAFSA or financial aid in general pertaining to their individual circumstances in Room 101 of the New Building at the college. Keystone College is located at 602 Main St., Towanda. Preregistration for the session is encouraged by calling (570) 268-2900. Dairy Of Distinction Application Deadline UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Pennsylvania dairy farms are invited to apply for this year's Dairy of Distinction award from the Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program. Applications must be submitted by April 15. The award is based on the idea that attractive farmsteads enhance consumer confidence in the wholesomeness of milk and stimulate milk sales and public support for the industry. Dairies receiving the highest scores in each of 10 Pennsylvania districts will be awarded an 18-inch by 24-inch Dairy of Distinction sign to display in front of their farm. "This program is run by volunteers and recognizes the hard work and dedication of dairy producers who promote a positive image for the dairy industry," says Mike O'Connor, secretary of the Pennsylvania Dairy of Distinction program and professor emeritus of dairy science in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. Roadside judging will take place in May, and farms will be evaluated on factors that can be controlled by the dairy producer. Judges will look for clean and attractively finished buildings; neat landscaping, ditches, roads and lanes; and well-maintained fences. They also will take into account other aspects of the farm, such as manure management and cleanliness of animals, the barnyard and feed areas. To receive an application, call O'Connor at (814) 863-3913 or visit http://dairyofdistinction.org. Since 1987, Pennsylvania's Dairy of Distinction program has recognized more than 800 dairy farms. The Pennsylvania program is part of the Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program, which also includes New York, New Jersey and Vermont. Dairies in these states can contact the program secretary in their state for applications.
Hope Arrives With Daffodil Days PENNSYLVANIA - For more than 35 years, the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days® program has been making a difference in the fight against cancer and providing hope for those facing the disease. Although Daffodil Days involves offering daffodils to donors every spring in appreciation for their contributions, it is about more than just giving beautiful flowers; it is an opportunity to share hope for a world with less cancer and more birthdays, where cancer never steals another year from anyone’s life. The 38th annual Daffodil Days campaign will take place in Pennsylvania during the week of March 14-20. Daffodil contributions provide the Society with much-needed dollars to help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; help people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking research; and fight back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight against cancer. Daffodil Days is the perfect way to fight back in your community, local companies, schools, places of worship, and with friends and family. Fore more information, or to place orders, please contact your local American Cancer Society office by calling 1-800-227-2345 or visiting cancer.org/daffodils. The deadline to place advanced orders is Tuesday, February 22.

Churches Announce Candlemas Observance Three of the Episcopal churches in Susquehanna County have announced their observances for the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, which is commonly called Candlemas, which will be held on Sunday, January 30. Services will be held at 9 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Montrose and at Christ Episcopal Church in Susquehanna and at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in New Milford. The Rev’d Paul Walker, Rector of St. Paul’s, will officiate and preach at St. Paul’s; The Rev’d Randy Webster will officiate and preach at the masses in Susquehanna and New Milford. The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus is one of the Holy Days of the church’s calendar, falling on February 2. The feast day commemorates the final requirement of Jewish law, recorded in Exodus 13, following the birth of every firstborn son who had to be dedicated to God in memory of the Isrealites’ deliverance from Egypt, when the firstborn sons of the Egyptians died and those of Israel were spared. The day is sometimes referred to as “Candlemas” because all of the candles for the coming year are dedicated on this day, recalling that Jesus is the light of the world. The annual Blessing of Throats, recalling the commemoration of St. Blasé, will also be offered. All three churches are churches in the Anglican tradition.
