Artist In Residence At Blue Ridge Elem.

On Wednesday, January 6, Blue Ridge Elementary School was fortunate to have Artist in Residence, Billye Kubiak, return to Kindergarten. This is the fifth year Blue Ridge has Miss Billye Kubiak working with their Kindergarten students. During the month of January Miss Billye taught children about choreography, props, scenery, costumes, singing and all the necessities of putting on a show. Each class will be performing a song and dance number. The children have been practicing daily and have been very busy creating the scenery with Miss Billye. This year’s theme will be “Kindergarten Coast to Coast.” On Tuesday, February 2, students will be performing for the elementary school during the school day and again in the evening for their families and community members. The evening program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Blue Ridge looks forward to another successful program.

Ms. Billye Kubiak has been a professional dancer, singer and actress. She performed in principle and chorus roles on Broadway, in national tours and on television. Billye was trained at The School of American Ballet and The Joffrey Ballet. She has choreographed over twenty musicals. Ms. Kubiak directs and choreographs show choirs, concerts and musicals for the Stroudsburg Area School District. She is rostered by the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts as an Artist in Residence and travels throughout the country teaching, choreographing and conducting workshops to performers of all ages. Billye now lives in Stroudsburg, PA with her husband and son.

Character Education At Blue Ridge Elem.

Blue Ridge fifth graders began a project in November with NEIU/PCA artist, Elizabeth Parry-Faist and elementary art teacher, Sarrah Dibble. This project was made possible by the PTO who funded the activity. Over the past two months the students created murals based on six character education pillars: respect, trustworthiness, caring, responsibility, citizenship, and fairness. Each mural defines and illustrates through mixed media the definition of the pillar.

Every single fifth grader had an important role in creating these murals. The classroom was filled with great ideas, cooperation, excitement, and most of all, character. It was a unique experience for the students to be able to work with artist, “Mrs. Liz.” Pictured above, Blue Ridge fifth graders, Sydney Repella and Brianna Shelanskey.

There will be an art reception in conjunction with the February 9 PTO meeting. Students and parents are invited to celebrate the art at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Elk Lake’s third debater in the field, freshman Austin Cohen, compiled a 2 win and 1 loss record in the preliminary rounds. That gave Elk Lake a combined 12 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds.

“All three debaters worked extremely hard over the past three weeks. This is an incredible beginning to the second half of the season. Sweeping both divisions of debate is very difficult at a tournament this competitive,” commented Elk Lake Forensics Director Keith Brosious.
