Elk Lake Elementary Students of the Month

Mr. Charles Pirone, Elementary Principal at Elk Lake School, is pleased to announce the April, 2003 Student of the Month Award winners.

Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades were selected by their homeroom teachers. Students may be selected as student of the month from four different areas. Those four areas are academic achievement, attendance, citizenship and most improved.

Elk Lake is proud of their students and congratulates them for their accomplishments.

Susky Team Places In The Stock Market

Students of Susquehanna Community High School recently participated in "The Stock Market Game," a ten-week program run by Temple University. There were eleven teams made up of students from the classes of Mr. Rick Mazikewich. On the regional level, three of the teams placed first, fourth, and tenth of 117 teams that entered. On the state level, two of the teams placed second and sixteenth out of 4,410 teams. Pictured (l-r) are the team of Nick Coleman, Jason Zawisky, Amanda Fallon and Joe Barnes.

Elk Lake Students At District Band Festival

The PMEA District Band Festival was held on Friday, April 25 at Bishop Hoban High School. The host directors were Doreen Ignatovich and Ann Marganiello. Students representing schools from all over Northeastern Pennsylvania performed an outstanding concert for parents and friends. The conductor of the fifth and sixth grade band was Mark Stransky. The conductor of the seventh and eighth grade band was Dr. Terry L. Zipay, Chairperson of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Wilkes University.

Students representing Elk Lake for the fifth and sixth grade band (l-r) were: Blair Smith (Percussion), Adam Ives (Trombone), Matthew Walters (Clarinet), Karin Mowry (Trumpet).

Students representing Elk Lake for the seventh and eighth grades (l-r) were: front row – Josh Wood, Broc Jennings, Maureen Manning, Mason Palmatier; back row – Zeb Ridall, Ariel Shiffer, Christina Jensen.

The students were accompanied to Bishop Hoban by their Band Director, Mrs. Catherine Rezykowski.

Susky Students Go To Holocaust Symposium

Seventh graders of Susquehanna Community School District attended the 15th Annual Teen Symposium on the Holocaust at Marywood University on May 13. They had the rare opportunity to meet survivors and liberators of the Holocaust in small group settings. They also saw a film on the Holocaust, "Children Remember the Holocaust." After lunch at the University, the keynote speaker for the day was Ed Lessing who spoke to the students on his experience as a hidden child during the Holocaust. Blue Ridge Essay Contest Winners

The Hallstead-Great Bend American Legion Auxiliary sponsored an Americanism Essay Contest at Blue Ridge Elementary School. The title of the essay was "What America’s Future Holds for Me!" Many students from Mrs. Barbara Buffington’s fifth grade class chose to participate.

One student, Shayna Hettinger, was recognized as the contest winner for her essay. She also received a savings bond for her efforts. Congratulations to all of the students for their work.

Ashley Gaffey Takes Science Award

Ashley Gaffey, a senior at Susquehanna Community High School, has been selected to receive a certificate and a cash prize of $500 as the recipient of the Grand Award in the statewide essay contest on the subject, "Why Are Animals Used in Biomedical Research?" Ashley was one of 617 students from 52 different schools who wrote on the topic and will be receiving her certificate and award at a reception in her honor on June 10 in Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research has also awarded $250 to Adam Napolitano, also a senior at Susquehanna, as a Finalist. In addition, the Society has selected Susquehanna students Michael Vadonsky, Rachel Smith, and Shannon Williams as recipients of Honorable Mention Awards in the contest for well-written essays.

The Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research is a non-profit science education organization that was founded in 1990. Universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical firms, and professional societies in Pennsylvania formed the society. Current members and supporters include many of the Commonwealth's leading biomedical research and educational institutions, professional societies, and hospitals.

Congratulations to Ashley, Adam, Michael, Rachel, and Shannon and to their science teacher, Ms. Anastasia Zabielski. Copies of the winning essays may be accessed at psbr@psbr.org after June 5.

Justin D’Angelo Graduates Wilkes

Justin D’Angelo, Susquehanna, son of Barb and Ron Whitehead, Susquehanna and Mike D’Angelo, Elmhurst, NY, graduated from Wilkes University on Saturday, May 17, 2003.

Justin graduated Cum Laude, receiving Bachelor’s Degrees in Communications and English (Honors).

Justin attended Susquehanna Community High School and Keystone College, where he received an Associates Degree in Communication.

Art/Talent Show At Susky High School

On Friday, May 30, the students of Susquehanna Community High School will present the fourth annual Fine and Performing Arts Night. The public is invited to support the students by enjoying an evening of art and music.

The night will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a computer-generated exhibit of artwork created by students in grades 7-12. The presentation will take place in the auditorium. The artwork will represent a sampling of pieces created in the areas of painting, drawing, and sculpture.

At 7:30 p.m., a talent show will be presented in the high school auditorium. The talent show will feature musical performers and comedy routines performed by Susquehanna’s talented students and teachers.

Admission to both shows is only $3.00 and all proceeds will benefit the Mike Robinson Memorial Scholarship in the Fine and Performing Arts.

Local Students To Graduate P C I

More than 800 students petitioned to graduate from Pennsylvania College of Technology in two commencement ceremonies, held May 17.

In the ceremonies, held in the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, students received bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees and certificates from the college, which is an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State University.

Mark Snitzer Gets Albright Honors

Mr. Mark D. Snitzer, a senior History/Political Science Major and graduate of Blue Ridge High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew M. Snitzer, Susquehanna, PA was recognized at Albright College’s 2003 Honors and Awards event held on Sunday, May 4.

Mark is the recipient of the Senior Concert Choir Award, presented to a senior who has demonstrated, through responsible action in college activities, a concern that extends to the larger community, and who has shown promise for further accomplishments that will better society.
