Encaustic Painting Demo In Montrose A demonstration by Peg Dudek at the June meeting of Hill Country Artists will explain and show the technique of encaustic painting. Peg has quite successfully developed this style of painting and will share with all who are interested. The business meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m., at the Claverack Building in Montrose on Thursday, June 5. The demonstration will follow this short meeting. Hill Country Artists will have their usual showing of works on the Green in Montrose at the July 4th celebration. Many new and exciting paintings will be on display. Be sure to stop and see what the artists have been doing during the past year. All meetings are open to the public. On Saturday, May 31 Haas Landscape Architects in coordination with The Friends of Salt Springs will be conducting an open community workshop, which will address topics concerning access to Fall Brook Gorge for park users and people with special needs. The workshop will include a project overview, tour of the proposed site and a "Visioning" exercise, which allows community members to explore and express creative solutions. Specific topics to be discussed are as follows: Project Scope; General Goals and Objectives for Study Area; Amenities; Study Area Vision and Values. The workshop will take place at the Salt Springs State Park Wheaton House between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Jeff Anna, Manager, Lackawanna State Park, and David Clemens (Friends) will lead a tour of the study area prior to the workshop. Different Kind Of Nature Walk When we take a walk in a beautiful natural place, the chatter of our daily life slips away, our perceptions expand, and we become more aware of our surroundings than we usually are. Wildflowers hidden among dry leaves, animal tracks on the trail, the diverse voices of birds: the more we notice, the more deeply engrossed we become in the experience of the walk. Yet how often do we notice our own thoughts, insights, memories, and feelings as we observe the details around us? A journey into the inner landscape, as well as the outer one is the subject of a nature walk led by Trebbe Johnson in Florence Shelly Preserve, Thompson, PA, on Sunday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m. "When we take a walk in nature, we are like mythic heroes on a quest," says Johnson, a writer and wilderness guide. "Paying attention to all the different things we encounter, and to our own response to them, we experience the entire walk as a fascinating story about own lives. Are you drawn to open spaces or sheltered woods? If you come to a stream, do you ford it, turn around and go the other way, or try to find a bridge? Each event, each choice is part of the myth." After a short introduction to the process, participants on this unique nature walk will have time to walk alone along the inviting trails that meander among the Shelly Preserve's woodlands, wetlands, streams, and meadows. The group will then gather together to exchange stories about what they discovered. The walk will end by 4:30. Trebbe Johnson has led wilderness journeys, ceremonies, and workshops worldwide, from Ground Zero in New York City, to clear-cut forests in the Pacific Northwest, to the Sahara Desert. She is a widely published author whose work on myth, nature, and spirituality has appeared in Sierra, The Los Angeles Times, Body and Soul, and other publications. Senior Citizens residing in the counties of Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Tioga are cordially invited to attend the 28th Annual Senior Citizens’ Picnic, to be held Thursday, June 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Alparon Park in Troy, PA. This year’s picnic theme is an Antique Automobile Show. Those wishing to enter an antique vehicle in the car show are asked to pre-register by calling Joyce McClary, at 1-800-982-4346 by June 4. A number of free Health Screenings Informational booths, and Bingo will be offered once again this year. A Presentation of Colors by Veterans’ Groups, coordinated by Harold Wegman of Montrose, will be featured during the picnic program to honor our troops and Veterans. Veterans are encouraged to wear the hat from their particular branch of service. A picnic lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is by reservation only. Stock Dog Trials In Hop Bottom The twenty-second annual Pennsylvania State Championship Stock Dog Trials will be held from Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, June 15, starting at 8 a.m. each day, at the beautiful Sheepy Hollow Farm, Hop Bottom, PA, sponsored by the First Universalist Church of Brooklyn, PA. Assorted foods, snacks and refreshments will be served daily. Breakfast will be served on Saturday and Sunday. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects 30,000 individuals in the United States. A walk will be held at the Susquehanna Community High School, on May 31, to help raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The money raised will be used to start new gene therapies and treatments. The walk will be held, rain or shine, on the high school track. Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 10:00. There will be an intermission and there will be refreshments, music and lots of prizes for the participants who raise large amounts in donations. If you would like to help raise money for the cause by being a participant, you can pick up a registration form at the Susquehanna Community High School office during regular school hours. Quilts Of The Endless Mountains Returns Montrose, in the heart of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, will again be host to the (re)named "Quilts of the Endless Mountains Show," Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11. The show committee's goal is to display 300 quilts from the Endless Mountains - but that's just the beginning! As in 2001, the show will be housed in several buildings, most within easy walking distance of each other. Each building will feature a unique aspect of the show - in addition to quilted items of all sizes on display. Although there is no fee to enter any quilted item in the show, there will be a slight fee ($3.00 per person) to attend the show. One ticket will admit the holder to all of the sites and will be available at each site. The United Methodist Church on Church Street, probably your first stop, will house antique quilts in the sanctuary. A vendor's mall in the main Social Room will feature local and national vendors. A quilt made by the Show Committee and a Janome sewing machine (compliments of Sister's Choice Quilt & Fabric Shop, Great Bend), both to be raffled by the close of the show on Saturday, will also be located here. A light lunch will be served by the United Methodist Women in the downstairs Wesleyan Room. Parking is available and fire police will be on hand to direct traffic at that busy intersection. The next stop on Church Street is at The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies, headquartered at 75 Church Street, location of the oldest building in Montrose. Built in 1816 as the first bank in Susquehanna County, it was later home to one of the members of the Anti-Slavery Society from 1840 to the 1880's. Enjoy the ambiance while you view the Challenge Projects, a new feature at the show this year. Fifty-some kits have been sold with a few still available. This project challenges a quilter to produce a finished quilt of 24 x 24 inches from a specific choice of fabrics. P & B Fabrics, a favorite line with many quilters, generously provided QEM with two bolts of fabric, "A Garden Plan" being the fabric which every challenge project must contain. Challenge Project 2005 kits will be available at this site to provide quilters the opportunity to begin creating their submissions for the next QEM Challenge immediately. Visitors to the show will enter and exit through the wide side porch off the drive; however, parking is at the Presbyterian Church next door. The next stop, as already mentioned, is the First Presbyterian Church, at 71 Church Street. Pedestrians may walk through the back yard of 75 Church Street to reach the entrance off the church parking lot. A borrowed exhibit from the American Quilter's Society entitled "United We Quilt" will be shown in the Westminster Dining Hall. These works were produced in response to the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center by internationally known quilters, a truly one-of-a-kind exhibition. The Show Committee is pleased to present this to the public. Thirty-three unique pieces are included in this exhibit. Further along and on the opposite side of Church Street is St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Using the center front entrance will bring the viewer to the quilts in the Parish Hall. With its high ceiling and large windows, this space offers perfection in displaying the larger quilts. From the side entry on Chestnut Street, pre-registrants will have opportunity to participate in a lecture and a class with well known author and quilt teacher, Anna Marie Tucker, of Milford, Pennsylvania. A limited number of openings will be available for each of the sessions, one to be held Friday afternoon; the other, Saturday morning, both in the Meeting Room below the Parish Hall. Another event limited to pre-registrants will be held on Saturday afternoon at Holy Name of Mary Parish Center, the pink Victorian gingerbread on South Main Street. This will be a combination slide-lecture and tea, limited to 35. Gloria Driscoll, of Endicott, and her sister present a fabulous program called "Stadell Mountain Quilts." These are antique quilts found in an old family-owned farm house. The tea will precede the program so that nothing sticky gets near the quilts. Sign up early. There is plenty of parking space next to this site. The QEM Show Committee welcomes inquiries regarding any of its planned activities. Those wishing to display one (or more!) quilted items may request a registration form. Those interested in the classes or the lecture/tea may request a show brochure. All participants in the 2001 show have received preliminary information and registration forms regarding the 2003 event, and will automatically receive the show brochure with schedules, classes and lecture/tea registration information.
