Ed Chianese Gets Clean Water Award

Submitted By Brenda Shambaugh, PA Association of Conservation Districts

The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD) in conjunction with the award sponsor, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), presented the operators of four farms with the Clean Water Farm Award during its annual conference on July 18, 2018 in Lancaster, PA. The honor is awarded annually to farmers who manage their daily farm operations in an environmentally conscious manner that helps to protect Pennsylvania's water quality.

The Pennsylvania 2018 Clean Water Farm Award Recipients are from Susquehanna, Franklin, Berks and Indiana Counties.

Ed and Gwen Chianese own Windcrest Farm, a 50 cow/calf beef farm in Jackson Twp. just south of Susquehanna, PA. The farm has 92 acres: 55 of cropland/hayland, 25 acres of pasture and 10+ acres of forestland. Best Management Practices (BMP's) also known as soil and water conservation practice include 9500 feet of diversions, 15000 feet of subsurface drainage, several grassed waterways, one stone lined waterway, 14 acres of contour strip-cropping, 7.1 acres of riparian buffers, 3 spring development systems installed with watering troughs for his beef herd, 450 feet of animal trail and walkway, a concreted barnyard and a manure storage facility and 3100 feet of streambank fencing.

Mr. Chianese's farming operations have been awarded with the Cooperator of the Year Award (1985), and twice he was presented with the No-Till Farmer of the Year award (2006 & 2017) by the Susquehanna County Conservation District (SCCD). Mr. Chianese has worked with the USDA Soil Conservation Service, now the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), since 1969 when his first farm conservation plan was written. He and the USDA NRCS have updated the farm conservation plan 3 times since then. Mr. Chianese has worked with the USDA NRCS for 48+ years receiving their technical (engineering) assistance and program help. In addition, he has also had a Nutrient Management plan written for his operation and a grazing plan. Future conservation projects include more pasture work by installing subsurface drainage to collect water for two water troughs, underground outlets, and livestock water pipeline. Mr. Chianese noted, "I am extremely pleased with all of the soil and water conservation technical assistance that I have received over the years from the USDA NRCS and the Farm Services Agency's Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), plus the help from the Susquehanna Conservation District and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I know and have seen a pronounced improvement of my soil and the water drainage and water holding capabilities of my cropland soils".

The Clean Water Farm award was initiated in 1986. Recipients of the award are nominated by their local county conservation districts. Financial support for this award is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) through the Chesapeake Bay.

Regulatory and Accountability Program and the Pennsylvania Chesapeake Bay Education Office (administered by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc.).

DEP has sponsored this award for the past thirty-two years. Recipients receive a certificate signed by the DEP Secretary and a large Clean Water Farm Award sign to erect on their property.

The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD) is a non-profit organization whose guiding values include: Sustainable Resource Conservation; Integrity, Local; Education and Outreach; and Partnerships. PACD primarily serves as the collective voice for Pennsylvania's 66 county conservation districts. For more information about PACD, visit www.pacd.org.

Monthly Dinner Church Continues

Submitted By Pastor Jackie Condon

United Methodist Community Church, 406 Main Street, Great Bend, is excited to hold our third monthly dinner church.

Join us on Monday, August 13 at 6:00pm at UMCC. This all-ages table fellowship is intergenerational and hands on, suitable for ages 1-99. Bring the entire family and spend an evening (approximately one hour) of fellowship and Bible discussion in our Social Room. Leave the meal planning and clean up to us. We will begin with a light dinner and discussion over the theme of the day.

As we cycle through the summer and anticipate the return of the academic school year, we will take a look at the beginning of creation as told in Genesis 1 and 2. Pulled pork sandwiches will be on the menu.

The "Dinner Church" movement is based on Acts 2:42: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Early Christians would gather in their homes over a meal to share the good news of Jesus.

Contact the church office at 570-879-4506 with any questions or if you would like to RSVP (reservations are helpful but not necessary).

Early Childhood Education Grants

Five educational facilities offering child care to families in Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna counties will benefit from state grants offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) announced.

The department's Office of Child Development and Early Learning have selected recipients for the 2018-19 Pre-K Counts and Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program.

Specifically, the grants have been awarded to:

  • Wyalusing Valley Children's Center Inc., Bradford County.

  • Discover the World Children's Center Inc., Bradford County.

  • Towanda Area School District, Bradford County.

  • Mountain View School District, Susquehanna County.

  • Forest City Regional School District, Susquehanna County.

"Studies show that children with access to early childhood education opportunities are better prepared for their school years and have greater chance to succeed, not just in education but in life," said Pickett. "These grants will help open up slots so that more families can take advantage of these worthwhile opportunities."

Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts provides high-quality pre-kindergarten services to at-risk 3 and 4 year-olds at no cost to families. Children living in families earning up to 300 percent of poverty, or a family of four earning $75,300 annually, are eligible to apply. Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts is offered in school districts, Keystone STARS 3 and 4 child care programs, Head Start programs and licensed nursery schools.

The grant amounts are based on qualifications and the number of families applying.

"Finding affordable child care is a struggle for families, and that's why these programs are so valuable, especially in rural areas like ours," Pickett added.

Families may contact the programs directly to apply. Contact information for Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts, Head Start and other early learning programs can be found by visiting the COMPASS website at www.findchildcare.pa.gov and clicking on "Early Learning and Development Programs," "Find a Provider," "Preschool," and "PA Pre-K Counts" or "Head Start."
