Brooklyn Historical Society Meeting

Submitted By David Palmer, Brooklyn Historical Society President

The Annual Meeting of the Brooklyn Historical Society will be held on July 22, at 2pm in the Brooklyn Township Building, Maple Street, Brooklyn. A major focus at this meeting will be on the future of the society's historic archives and collection as related to the potential for a new Brooklyn Township Building. This issue is vitally important to the society, as it appears the current township building may have to be demolished. Draft minutes of the spring meeting in April, 2018 will be acted upon by the society. A progress report of the effort to place a scenic overlook information site on Zick Hill, for viewing the Martins Creek Viaduct; as well as the effort to obtain an official, state historical marker for the same viaduct will be provided at this meeting.

A review of approximately 12 boxes of historic documents recently found on the third floor of the Township Building (former Brooklyn grade school) will interest any history sleuth. Some of the documents go back to 1848. Election of officers will be conducted at this July meeting.  If any member would like to place his or her name in nomination, please contact David Palmer at davesolopalmer@gmail.com or 570-498-6637.

Other items on the agenda include a status of the Old West Side Cemetery, grant applications to the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau for the new museum, and renewing the society's website domain name. Finally, several members of the society who have passed away recently will be memorialized. The July meeting promises to be an interesting and informative one. Bring a friend…a new member.
