Historical Society Receives Grant $$

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has awarded over $22,000 in grants to six eligible museums and official county historical societies in Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Union counties, according to state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23).

"The 23rd Senatorial District is home to some great museums and historical societies, which exhibit the rich history that we have in North Central and Northeastern, Pennsylvania," Sen. Yaw said. The grants awarded will help these facilities continue the work they do preserving history, and educating the public."

The Susquehanna County Historical Society received a grant for $4,000.

The funding will help strengthen the region's museum community by supporting the general operations of the museums and official county historical societies that are not supported by other state agency funding programs.

According to PHMC, the award amounts are determined using an equation based on a percentage of the eligible museum's previous year's operating budget. The maximum any museum could receive is $50,000. All official county historical societies receive a $4,000 minimum grant.

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Pet of the Week

Memphis

You don't need "Blue Suede Shoes" to take a walk with this Memphis! Just like the Blues music that flows through my namesake's streets, my soulful eyes and disposition make me a great new friend. I am up to date on shots, microchipped and dewormed. I'm a very well behaved dog who will be a very faithful companion. I do prefer a home with no other pets. If you have room at your 'Graceland' for me, please stop by! I'd love to meet you.

As the weather gets warmer, individuals will begin to head outside to enjoy the sunshine.

However, according to the National Safety Council (NSC) 488,123 people were treated in emergency departments after being injured riding a bike, and about 1,100 deaths resulted from cyclists colliding with motor vehicles in 2015.

National Bike Month is observed each May, to showcase the many benefits, including staying in shape, saving gas money, and reducing pollution, of bicycling while encouraging more individuals to participate.

The American Trauma Society, Pennsylvania Division (ATSPA) provides the following tips to ensure you're safe on your bicycle: Always wear a properly fitted bike helmet; Wear brightly colored clothing; Choose a bicycle that fits you now.
