TUESDAYS

COMMUNITY CHORUS: Due to scheduling conflicts, the Susquehanna Community Chorus will meet on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. instead of Mondays at 7:30 p.m. Practices will be held at St. John's Hall until July 17. On July 17 we will move to Susquehanna Community High School. Our concert will be held on Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. at the Susquehanna Community High School Auditorium. It is not too late to join our group. Anyone who is interested, please come to our next practice.

APRIL 26

SCFB SPRING MEETING: The Susquehanna County Farm Bureau annual Spring Meeting will be held at 6:30pm, at the Montrose Bible Conference, Lake Avenue Dining Hall. "Meet the Candidate" forum and Basket auction will be held. The reservation deadline is April 19. For further information contact Donna Williams at 570 942 6348.

RUMMAGE AND BAKE SALE: At the Franklin Hill Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 27 from 9AM til 2PM and Saturday, April 28 from 9AM til 1PM. Lunch will be served both days (homemade soups and sandwiches). Located half way on Franklin Hill Road between Lawsville Center on Route 29 and Summersville on Route 11.

FREE LUNCHEON: The Stone Soup Kitchen at Christ Episcopal Church, at the corner of Delaware and Dundaff Streets, Forest City, is thrilled to continue our program of monthly Free Community Luncheons. As always, we welcome all who come through our doors to enjoy a hearty meal that we happily serve with warm and friendly fellowship. Servings begin at 12pm - 1:30pm. 25th Year for NA Trap Association

The North American Trap Collectors Association will once again be holding its NE North American event at North Orwell in Bradford County. This unique event will be held at the newly renovated North Orwell Community Hall, Route 187 on May 4th starting at 7am. There will be morning breakfast, baked goods and lunchtime food.

Bruce McCormack, one of the event organizers, explained, "The displayers/dealers will offer for sale antique, modern, new and used traps, hunting, fishing and trapping memorabilia, some guns and bows and a lot of sporting collectibles. Displayers/dealers will be able to set up starting Thursday at noon or at 6am on Friday morning. The event will run from 7am Friday to noon on the same day." Bruce further clarified, "These meets are a great time for both members and those who are new to trap collecting or just the curious to come and learn about the history of traps, trap collecting and what each person is interested in. There are about 1200 to 1500 members (worldwide) most of which are in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. The Association puts out a bi-monthly magazine 'TRAPS'. Membership in the Association is open to anyone."

Bill Kasten, long time trapper from Susquehanna County, a meet displayer and one of the event organizers explained, "Our meet is held rain or shine. There is currently room inside and outside the building for displayers. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend as there is no cost to enter the building".

Build a Mason Bee House

Join Penn State Extension Master Gardeners Jim Kasten and Lori Wallace on Saturday, April 28 from 10 am to noon at Salt Springs State Park to learn how to make a Mason Bee house.

Mason Bees are solitaire bees and great pollinators. More dependable and productive then honey bees in early spring. Build them a Mason Bee Lodge. Learn how to attract these native bees plus other pollinators and beneficial insects. Please bring your own cordless drill if possible; we have a limited supply of drills. Dead line to order materials is April 20th. Or, you may just simply listen to the discussion and observe the building of the lodges.

Candidates' Meet And Greet Planned

Before you head to the polls on May 15th, you may want to know if the candidates' concerns are your concerns. All federal and state candidates appearing on the ballots have been invited to a 'Meet and Greet' on the evening of Tuesday, May 1st at 6 PM. The venue is in the Susquehanna County Library's Community Room, High School Road, Montrose and all voting parties are invited. Light refreshments will be served.

Fish Hatchery Tour

On Thursday, April 26, the Montrose Area Adult School has arranged an educational tour of the Pennsylvania State Fish Hatchery at Pleasant Mount. The facility has been in operation since 1903 and raises and stocks streams and lakes with a number of different of species of native fish in addition to the popular trout.

The tour will include information on the process of fertilizing, hatching and raising these fish in indoor runs and nursery tanks as well as outdoor runs. The sources of water used and of the parent fish will be explained.

Harford To Host Day Of Prayer

There will be a prayer service at the Harford Volunteer Fire Hall Gazebo, Harford, PA at noon on Thursday, May 3,2018. Rain, shine or snow.

Please join us as we petition the Lord our God on behalf of our United States of America and the many problems it faces. We will also intercede on behalf of the International community.

We need to remember to thank our Lord God for His many blessings. One of them being the freedoms we have in this country, although we are in danger of losing many. We have to be ever vigilant and fight to retain them.

As President Reagan said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."

Please, bring a chair and dress for the weather.

Learn To Play The Native Flute

The opportunity to learn how to play the Native flute is being offered through a workshop at The Belize Fund's American Indian Resource Center in Susquehanna on Saturday, May 5.

The Native Flute Workshop takes place from 1-3pm, during which attendees will learn the basics of playing from how to properly hold the instrument to where to position the fingers to create beautiful sounds.

Participants will not only be instructed by a Native flute player, but will also have the opportunity to try out different flutes. Those who have their own flute are encouraged to bring it. Anyone can attend - whether you have no experience or are a seasoned player.

The workshop will be held on the grounds of The Belize Fund's American Indian Cultural Center, 163 Melrose Road, about 15 minutes off I-81, Exit 230. Pre-registration is not required, but helpful.

There is a fee, which includes refreshments.

Learning About The Spotted Lanternfly

Have you heard of the newest destructive pest, the Spotted Lantern Fly? This large, invading leafhopper from China is a serious threat to the public, the state's forestry products and all commerce in Pennsylvania.

Learn how to identify, report, kill and comply with quarantine regulations at an informational/training/Q&A program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17 at the Mountain View High School auditorium, Kingsley.


The Spotted Lanternfly is a prolific reproducer

Individuals and businesses are encouraged to attend this free program, sponsored by the Susquehanna County Commissioners and Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Susquehanna County.

Speakers include Sarah Hall-Bagnonas of Northern Tier Hardwoods Association and Timothy Latz, DCNR Service Forester.

There is a quarantine in place for 13 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania to try to stop the movement of this insect. Currently, it has spread as far north as Monroe County. State officials caution they expect the quarantine to grow this year and the insect could work its way into our region.

There is a serious threat of the lantern fly spreading due to the fact that it lays its egg masses on any flat surface, including vehicles and trailers.

This destructive insect feeds on a variety of more than 70 species of plants including hardwood trees, grapes, apples, peaches, ailanthus, hops and certain ornamental plants.

This affects everyone: Nurseries, farm stores, landscapers, mulch businesses, loggers, truckers and travelers and vacationers. Businesses are advised to educate your staff.

Businesses, government agencies, and other organizations in the quarantined area must obtain permits from the Pa. Department of Agriculture in order to continue moving in and out of the quarantine zone. To receive a permit, you must take a training class and pass a 20-question multiple choice test. The May 17 meeting will serve as the training you need to obtain the permits. You can take the test and obtain a free permit from 2-4 p.m. Friday, May 18 at the County Office Building conference room, 81 Public Avenue in Montrose. The testing is for all area industry who need to obtain permits.

The public is encouraged to attend.

Preserving Your Beautiful Blooms

Learn ways to preserve your beautiful flowers with Penn State Extension Master Gardeners Lori Wallace and Jim Kasten on Saturday, May 5 from 1-3 pm at St. Mark's Parish in New Milford.

Spring is a special time of year. As the days grow warmer, all types of flowers and foliage begin to appear in a huge assortment of colors and shapes. A welcome relief after a long cold dark winter. Pressing flowers and foliage is a simple way to immortalize and preserve the colors of springtime and summer. The old way of sliding blooms into a phone book and stacking heavy books on top works, but the stack is cumbersome; it gets in the way; flowers are disturbed each time you add new ones, resulting in shattered, mildewed or simply lost specimens. When you know how to make a flower press, you eliminate those problems and create beautifully dried blossoms.


Perfectly Preserved Flowers

Join us and learn several methods of pressing flowers as well as other ways of preserving spring and summers bounty of blooms. Gather some horticultural information plus a few inspirational ideas on what to do with the preserved flowers afterwards. Following the lecture you can assemble your own flower press with parts that have been premade by Master Gardeners and begin the process of pressing a few flowers. This is a fun project for children and adults alike.
