Promoting The Dairy Industry

Hello! My name is Michayla Stahl and I am the 2017-2018 Susquehanna County Dairy Princess. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed spending time with their loved ones. As everyone reflects back on their past year, everyone remembers something different. Some may focus on the New Year's resolutions that they had or hadn't followed through with last January. Others may focus on the pain and grief brought by loved ones passing away. As for me, I decided to focus on the impact I've had on so many people's lives during my rein as Dairy Princess.

Dairy Princess Michayla Stahl

I was crowned in May of 2017, and since then my court and I have completed over 300 dairy promotions. Those promotions were filled with plenty of laughter and often a little frustration. However, I've had the chance to grow close to the girls on my court, and as a team we have changed people's lives. We have gotten to encourage kids, teenagers, adults, the elderly, and parents to incorporate three servings of dairy into their diet every day, but more importantly, we have shared our love and passion for the dairy industry we promote. Our job, as promoters, isn't just about going out and telling people to drink milk. Our job is to open the eyes of consumers. We open their eyes to the incredible work our local famers do every day despite injury, illness, and disappointing milk prices. We open their eyes to the amazing benefits of consuming three servings of dairy every day, and lastly, we open their eyes to the passion we share, hoping they might start to share the same kind of passion.

As your New Year begins, instead of making a challenging New Year's resolution I encourage you to incorporate three simply servings of dairy into your everyday diet. The first serving can be eight ounces of yogurt with your breakfast in the morning. The second serving of the day can be as simple as having a few slices of cheese on your sandwich, or having a cheese stick for a snack. The third serving of the day can be an eight-ounce glass of cold, chocolate milk. Low fat chocolate milk is proven to be an all-natural muscle builder, bone strengthener and a mineral and vitamin rich drink.

I wish you good luck on your journey through 2018, and I pray your year is blessed with positive changes.

Happy Holidays and God bless!

Pet of the Week

Anna

Christmas may have come and gone, but the sprit of Christmas magic still lives in little Anna's heart! She still has not given up on finding her own home and a "Wonderful life".  Anna, who along with her brother Buddha  was found on a doorstep in a taped box by a couple who had been on vacation. Emaciated, suffering from a respiratory infection, and exposed to the frigid temperatures without food or water, it is unknown how long these two sweet souls were left there to fight for their survival.

After coming to True Friends and  receiving proper medical care and lots of TLC, both kitties made full a recovery.  Buddah was lucky enough to find his forever home.  Anna, a 4 month old Snowshoe mix still waits patiently for that loving home where she can snuggle to her heart's content.  Extremely affectionate and simply adorable, we are hoping to make 2018 Anna's lucky year. Please come in and meet this special kitty and find the perfect cuddle buddy who will surely warm your heart.

Between the freezing cold temperatures and animals in need of medical care, True Friends is off to a rough start to the new year and we are afraid it is going to be a very long Winter for us. If you can’t adopt, please consider donating.  Help us keep our area’s homeless animals safe, warm, and healthy.

Visitors Bureau Releases Guide

The Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau has announced the release of its 2018 Guide to the Endless Mountains.

The 64-page color booklet is an informational guide to the Endless Mountains Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, covering everything from where to stay and dine, to what to see and do in Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties. The category-based layout makes information on activities, lodgings, shops, eateries, scenic sites, and businesses easy to find.

In the guide, the reader will find where local museums, monuments, and historic sites can be found. It also points out breathtaking scenic vistas and overlooks, as well as where to enrich the mind through art exhibits, music, and theatre performances. There is also a variety of recreational opportunities listed including biking, hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing, golfing, and skiing. The annual events section is a collection of fun things happening in the Endless Mountains, while the community resources section assists in finding businesses or organizations in the area when needed. The event venue and resource sections makes this piece great for planning a destination wedding, family reunion, or business retreat.

The guide also includes the winning photos from the 2017 Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau Photo Contest, as well as information on how to enter the 2018 photo contest, which is open for submissions now through September 30, 2018.

Fill A Bag For Kids Project

The Christmas meeting of the Beta Rho Chapter was held at St. Mark’s Parish Hall in New Milford.  The local chapter members of women educators of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International participate in a variety of projects to help women and children.  The “Fill a Bag for Kids” project involved members filling a backpack or some type of tote with supplies for children at the Women’s Resource Centers in Montrose and Tunkhannock.  Pat Arnold, chairman of the Personal Growth and Services Committee, organized the collection of bags.

Pictured (L-R) with some of the bags are: Beta Rho Chapter members Kathleen Hinkley, Kathy Fuller, Jeanette Saulo, Pat Arnold, Lansdale Shaffmaster and chapter president Dr. Nancy Simon.

Members were encouraged to think about what a child might need if he/she were suddenly removed from his home with a parent.  A wash cloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, gum, candy, crackers, socks, undies, hair ties, small blanket, toy, book, hat, gloves, balls, jump ropes, fancy band aids, lip balm and sippy cups were items suggested to fill the bags for kids.  Tags were made for the bags so that items could be specific to a boy or girl of a certain age. The categories were a boy or girl each in pre-k to k, grades 1-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and high school.

Forty bags were collected and then donated to two Women’s Resource Centers.  The centers were so pleased with the donations and indicated what a help it would be to families who come to the center.

'18 Dog Licenses Now Available

Dog Licenses for 2018 Now Available at County Treasurer’s Office; All Dogs Must be Licensed by Jan. 1

Susquehanna County dog owners are reminded to purchase a 2018 dog license as required by Pennsylvania law.

“Dogs are an important part of our families,” said Jason Miller, Susquehanna County Treasurer.

“Losing your dog can be devastating. The best chance on having your dog returned safely is by having it properly licensed.”

State law requires that all dogs, three months or older, be licensed each year.  Failure to license a dog is a summary offense and could result in a maximum fine of $300 for each unlicensed dog.

The dog license application is simple. It only requests owner contact information, and details about the dog being licensed, like name, age, breed and color.

An annual dog license is $8.50, or $6.50 if the animal is spayed or neutered. Lifetime licenses are available for dogs that have permanent identification like a microchip or tattoo. Older adults and people with disabilities may be eligible for discounts.

Licensing fees support the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Dog Law Enforcement Office, which ensures the welfare of breeding dogs and puppies in commercial breeding kennels, regulates dogs classified as dangerous, and oversees annual licensure and rabies vaccinations for dogs.

Susquehanna County residents can purchase their dog licenses on-line at www.padoglicense.com; there is a $2 per license convenience fee to order dog licenses online; or you can purchase licenses in person at the Treasurer’s office from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Susquehanna County Courthouse, Montrose.

For more information call 570-278-4600, extension 4082, 4083, or 6695; or visit www.licenseyourdogPa.com.

Senior Centers Spreading Cheer

Last week, the Susquehanna County Senior Centers pooled together to provide just over 150 Christmas gift bags to Meals on Wheels Endless Mountains recipients, most of whom might not otherwise get out to see loved ones over the holiday season.

(pic) (cap) “Elves” packing goodie gift bags for Meals on Wheels Endless Mountains recipients.

It all started when Susquehanna County’s Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Allen saw a story on Facebook about another Meals on Wheels program that pooled together to send gift bags to their meal recipients in early November. She reached out to the local senior centers that provide home-delivered meals to homebound aging adults to see if they would be interested. Each center agreed to contribute money to go toward the bags, and several goodies. Kelly also reached out to the community and received donations of food, money, and drawings by the local daycare children. Available staff members then gathered at the Lanesboro Senior Center, and together with several helpful elves, put all the items in the bags, which were then divvied up per center and delivered with the meals as a surprise on the 21st and the 22nd of December. Recipients were very surprised and touched, offering gratitude to the drivers and the center managers.

The Susquehanna County Senior Centers would like to thank their center participants, Paul & Lynn Montalbano, Debbie Wood Flower, Sally Brozonis, Brianna Deater, Lisa Allen, Gaylene Mowry, Cortney Tyler, and members of the Lawton Community Group for pooling together in this selfless manner to donate either money or food to be put in the gift bags. And thank you to our Center Managers, as well as our elves Regina Dilello, Tina Graham, Mary Heesh, Florence Payne, and Pat White, for giving your time to put the bags together.
