Paint The Plow
“Paint the Plow” is a statewide outreach aimed at promoting winter driving safety and fostering appreciation for high school art programs. Earlier this year, PennDOT invited high school students from the region to paint plow blades based on the regional theme “511pa.com – Know Before You Go.” The theme was chosen to draw attention to PennDOT’ s website www.511pa.com, which features information on roadway conditions, travel speeds, and plow truck routes. Many schools painted plows that centered on the importance of slowing down during the winter, and on keeping a safe distance from plow trucks.

Teens from Hazleton Area High School, Pittston Area High School, Wallenpaupack Area High School, Blue Ridge High School, Mountain View Jr/Sr High School and Susquehanna Community High School participated in the program.

On Friday, December 1, 2017, students, administration, faculty, and staff of the Mountain View School District celebrated a tight-knit community through Family & Consumer Sciences Day—the national celebration that educates families about the importance of preparing healthy meals and “Dining In” together.
On that day, the Mountain View School District family shared breakfast together. The Mountain View School District provided a free, home style breakfast to all students, administration, faculty, and staff in both the high school and the elementary school buildings.

Pictured (l-r) are: Robert Presley, High School Principal; Dr. Elaine M. Chichura, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher; Kelsey Murphy, senior; Carole Rainey, School Counselor; Erin Kiryluk, Food Service Director; Karen Voigt, Superintendent; Dr. Christopher J. Lake, Acting Elementary Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Andrea James, elementary faculty; Rose Williams and Ruby Bishop. Elementary and high school head custodians are missing from photo.
In an effort to further cultivate a culture of connectedness and to encourage families to prepare and eat a healthy meal together at home, students in the Family and Consumer Sciences classes along with Elaine M. Chichura, D.Ed., Family and Consumer Sciences teacher; Karen Voigt, Superintendent; Robert Presley, Dr. Christopher Lake, high school and elementary school principals respectively; Erin Kiryluk, Food Service Director; Carole Rainey, School Counselor; Andrea James, elementary school faculty, and Ruby Bishop and Rose Williams head custodians at the high school and elementary school respectively planned this district wide breakfast. Students and adults shared a meal while having an opportunity to socialize outside of the traditional classroom setting.
In addition to sharing a meal in school, individuals are encouraged to join in a national campaign sponsored by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). Individuals can show their support for the “Dine In” campaign by committing to “Dine In” on the AAFCS web site. Their commitment to the project will appear on an interactive map on the web site. Since 2014, more than 300,000 people have committed to "Dining In" on Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day! This year, the fourth year of the celebration, AAFCS set a goal of 100,000 “Dining In” commitments.
December 3rd was chosen as Family & Consumer Sciences Day to honor Ellen Swallow Richards, first female graduate of MIT, by celebrating FCS Day on her birthday. Through the FCS Day initiative, AAFCS provides information, tools, and research on the benefits of families preparing and eating healthy meals together. With the numerous benefits to families preparing and sharing meals together, “Dine In” in school or at home calls attention to something simple that families can do to be healthier. “We are proud to take part in this important initiative,” Chichura said.
