Cornell Botanic Garden Tour

Join the Montrose Area Adult School for a tour coordinated by Master Gardener Lori Wallace to Cornell Botanic Gardens, an area of great natural beauty and serenity. The tour is Saturday, July 8th and there is still room to attend. The botanical garden, arboretum and on-campus natural areas are located adjacent to the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, NY. This will be a one day bus trip which will include a guided tour of several specialty gardens. The guided tour will include the Pounder Vegetable Garden which features earth-friendly and home-friendly ways to garden. Part of this garden is dedicated to the Climate Change Garden which demonstrates how a changing climate affects the plants we grow.  The Robison York State Herb Garden features over 500 plant varieties of herbs, or plants that have human use or significance. The Young Flower Garden celebrates human responses to significant and useful plants by revealing how these plants are reflected in art, literature, ceremony, the symbolic meanings they communicate, and the emotions they evoke.  The Ground Cover Collection includes a wide range of plants that make ideal groundcovers for either shady, sunny, or sloped areas and can provide an attractive and more sustainable alternative to a high-maintenance lawn. You will have free time to wander and see other gardens that may interest you.  Bus will head home at 3pm.  Be sure to pack your own lunch and drinks or lite refreshments are available at the welcome center.  Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, sun screen and your best walking shoes.

For more information or help registering call the Penn State Extension Office at 570.278.1158.

Nature “Sit” To Discover Insects

Florence Shelly Wetlands Preserve, Thompson, PA, is known for the guided nature walks if offers throughout the summer. But on the evening of Friday, July 7, at 9:00 PM, you are invited to join entomologist Rob Anderson for a nature “sit” to discover insects.

Mr. Anderson will set up a net made of very fine mesh, and shine a light on it to attract a wide variety of insects. Seated around the net, participants will get a rare, close-up view of some of the insects we normally see only when they are thumping against our window screens or feel fluttering against our faces after dark.

Besides identifying the insects, Anderson will describe how to distinguish insects from “true bugs,” which have piercing, sucking mouth parts that they keep retracted behind their heads until they are ready to eat. He will also talk about the danger that many pollinators are currently facing because of pesticides and habitat destruction.

Rob Anderson received a BA in biology in1995 from Stockton State College and another BA in 1997 in secondary education for science. He earned his Masters Degree in Medical Etymology at the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. from Penn State. He has taught middle school science and currently teaches Etymology at Rowan University.

This insect walk is the fourth in the Florence Shelly Wetlands Preserve’s 2017 series of monthly guided walks with local naturalists.

The insect discovery evening will begin at 9:00 PM at the preserve parking lot on Little Ireland Road, just off Route 171, a mile north of Thompson. The walk is free and you don’t have to make a reservation. Bring a blanket or camp chair to sit on and a flashlight. For further information, contact Trebbe Johnson, 570-396-0293.
