Photo By Chelsey Saam An audience of school board members past and present, active and retired teachers and support staff members, parents, students, and the foods class at the high school recently filled the Mountain View Elementary School gym. The event was the silver anniversary celebration of the opening of that building twenty-five years ago. Guests were greeted in the lobby and presented with programs and identifying badges made by the Student Council members. They were encouraged to walk the halls and vote for their favorite decorated door which was a part of the celebration while enjoying fresh popped popcorn provided by the PTO. Harford Fair winning entries were displayed throughout the building and in the gym. The “25 Years of Excellence” program began at 6:30 PM in the gym and with entertainment by the Chimettes under the direction of music teacher Molly Birosak. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Student Council members and the elementary principal Christine Kelly welcomed everyone. Superintendent Karen Voigt served as MC and began by introducing Dr. Nancy Simon, the former elementary principal at the 1991 dedication of the school, who gave her reflections on the event. She was complimented for successfully bringing together the three community schools at that time to one building. Dr. Andrew Chichura, former superintendent at the 1991 dedication who gave an overview of the history of the building of the facility. Karen Voigt read two reflection pieces which she received from Marilyn Light retired kindergarten teacher and Cheryl Decker, present pre-K teacher. She then recognized various notable groups who were in the audience beginning with the members of the school board at the time of the dedication which included President Garry Folitz, First Vice-President MarkWilmot, treasurer Ordie Price, William Beeman, Robert Sadauckas, Thomas Salansky, and George Spedding. All were in attendance except for second vice president James Zick who passed away while still an active member of the board. The present board members who were present were also introduced.
Superintendent Voigt then announced several different groups of individuals who were recognized for returning for the celebration. First were the twenty teachers who had retired from the elementary building since it opened twenty-five years ago. They included Pat Arnold, Anne Bode, Rose Borgna, Debbie Earley, Lois Frantz, Anne Gregory, Mary Harrison, Norma Jaget, Janet Karhnak, Beth Komar, Marilyn Light, Charlene Olcese, Jan Price, Cindy Reynolds, Laurie Rood, Connie Schulte, Cynthia Singer, Mary Walker, Linda Whitney, and Sue Wildrick. Former elementary school principal Peg Foster was also introduced. Seven retired support staff members in attendance included Eloise Cobb, Lois Howell, Barbara Kelly, Judy Naniewicz, Linda Shupp, Ivie Simons, and Richard Thomas. Four teachers and staff members in attendance who are still working and were there when the building opened included Laurie Barlow, Roberta Harvey, Cheryl Decker, and Judy Bell. Other interesting facts and groups were also noted, such as the fact that there are twenty-eight Mountain View graduates who are either teaching or on staff presently in the district. Superintendent Voigt then talked about items that came from the three elementary buildings and were incorporated or displayed in the new Mountain View Elementary building. Most notable are the beautiful black bells from the Brooklyn and Harford Buildings incorporated within the front design of the building. Two members of the Brooklyn Historical Society, Lt. Col. USAF Retired David Palmer and Richard Zick, were present to accept two pieces of art work which had been framed and preserved by Dr. Chichura when the Brooklyn building was closed. Since the building now houses the Brooklyn Historical Society, Mrs. Voigt and the Board of Education thought it appropriate to return them to that building for display. Principal Kelly then acknowledged those who had assisted in making the celebration such a memorable event. She shared some of the activities which were a part of the week at the elementary building designed to help the present students understand and appreciate the history of the school. Activites included daily dress up days with a theme; a door decorating contest between grade levels; a tree planting in honor of the celebration; and the burying of a time capsule. The school purchased tee shirts for all of the elementary faculty, staff and students to wear on Friday. Spirit games took place Friday afternoon as did “Pay to Slime your Teacher” which raised $600.35 and donated to the Eastern Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation for kids with bleeding disorders. Principal Kelly then introduced the band director, Mason Stiver, whose students performed and ended with the assembly singing the Mountain View Alma Mater. She also encouraged everyone to enjoy the deliciously prepared and beautifully displayed snacks provided by Dr. Elaine Chichura, consumer science teacher at the high school, and her foods class students. The Nutrition Group, the food service which provides the breakfast and lunch program in the district also provided refreshments of vegetables, fruits, crackers and cheese. Photos of the activities and the celebration can be viewed on the Mountain View School District’s website. Beta Rho Chapter Initiates Members Two teachers from the Faith Mountain Christian Academy and one from the Susquehanna Community School District were initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International at the October meeting in Montrose. The initiates included Jaime Lynn Bolinger, a speech and language pathologist at Susquehanna; Julie Griggs, a math and science teacher for grades 7-12 and Amy Radford, an English and History teacher of grades 7-12, both of Faith Mountain Academy.
President Dr. Nancy Simon conducted her first business meeting of the biennium. She welcomed everyone and introduced her theme “Getting to Know You.” As a part of this theme, she intends to involve more members throughout each meeting. She will also have one of the committees present at each meeting, telling about its purpose, members and responsibilities. During the committee reports, Pat Arnold, chairman of the Personal Growth and Services Committee introduced Cindy Wooden, one of her committee members in attendance. Brandi Miller is also on the committee but was unable to attend. Cindy explained that the committee’s purpose is to encourage members to grow and serve. She gave several examples of enrichment activities in the area. Pat then explained a service project which will be to “pack a purse.” She had an example of a purse filled with personal items which a woman might need if she had to leave her home suddenly. She encouraged members to bring these to the December meeting and they would be donated to the Women’s Resource Center. Other committee reports were also presented which included the proposed budget, scholarships available at the state level, and the encouragement to recommend someone for the chapter achievement award. Jeanette Saulo then proudly spoke about her gift to each member of the chapter as a memorable legacy to her biennium. She had made lovely tapestry designed key pin holders for each member to store their DKG pins in and noted that there was a printed message inside which explains to family members what to do with the pins when the member passes away. All were so appreciative to receive the lovely piece of handiwork. Reports were then given on the State Convention held in State College by Jeanette Saulo; the International Convention which was in Nashville, Tennessee by Cindy Reynolds; and the Purposeful Seminar which was in Pittsburgh by Susan Lee. All members were encouraged to think about attending DKG events beyond the chapter level to get a total picture of the Society. Just prior to dinner, a lovely candlelight initiation ceremony was conducted by membership chairman and second vice president, Patricia Carpenter, and members Megan Beny Piekarski and Meghan Gilleran Truskolaski and President Dr. Nancy Simon. Each of the initiates was escorted to the presentation by her sponsor. The backdrop for the ceremony was the beautifully designed quilted banner of the symbols of the Society. The new initiates lit a red candle, signed the chapter register and received their membership certificates. Their sponsor presented them with a lovely single red rose, which symbolizes friendship, loyalty and helpfulness—the work of each for all and pinned them with a key pin. The group sang “Symbols of Delta Kappa Gamma”, welcomed each new member individually and ended with hands joined singing “The Delta Kappa Gamma Song” A delicious dinner was served in The Tea Room following the initiation and the handmade key pin holders given as a gift by Jeanette Saulo served as favors on the tables. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 82, 000 members in seventeen different countries around the world. The Society defines its mission as promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. The Beta Rho Chapter is one of fifty-eight chapters in Pennsylvania whose members are key women educators in Bradford, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties. The Society offers more leadership training opportunities for women educators than any other professional organization. These include scholarships for both active and retired members, stipends for educational projects, and online courses for professional growth. The next Beta Rho Chapter meeting will be at The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies in Montrose on Saturday, December 3rd. Mary Ann Cunningham and Kathy Fuller will present the program utilizing the information they presented at their workshop at the State Convention. This will be a review of each of their Enrichment Grants. Other upcoming events include the Arts Retreat which will be held in Ludlow, Pennsylvania April 21-23, 2017, the Tri-Chapter meeting April 29, 2017, at La Una Banquet Hall in Dunmore, and the State Convention June 9-11, 2017, at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College. The Susquehanna Community High School Class of 1971 recently held its 45th class reunion. Dinner and dancing was enjoyed by all at the Susquehanna American Legion. At True Friends we are aware, from a great deal of experience, how misunderstood Pitbulls really are. We know they are actually the most affectionate, loyal, and fun loving dogs you can find. Because of this, we are still celebrating our “Pittie Pride” and waiving our adoption fees throughout the remaining month of October in hopes of finding each of our angels the love they so crave. Now is the time to open your hearts and minds to one of these incredible dogs! Pictured are Bullwinkle, the chic magnet, and his adoring lady fans. Each of these sweethearts is hoping to get their chance at new, loving home with someone who sees how special they truly are. Join us this "CATURDAY",Oct 29th, as we also celebrate National Cat Awareness Day by waiving our adoption fees throughout the month of November. We gratefully ask that you do donate what you can afford to offset our kitties' medical and shelter care expenses. Fun Fact: President Theodore Roosevelt, President Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, General George Patton, Fred Astaire, and Humphrey Bogart were all pitbull owners. Join this respected group of famous folks and give pit a chance! As the season opens with archery, I wonder how many are preparing for the defense against Lyme disease. Pennsylvania has been on the top of the list for new cases in the past several years, and yet so many are still unaware of the consequences. I spoke recently to another couple whose son is being crippled, had all the signs including a huge bulls eye and yet even when they asked to be tested for Lyme disease were denied. I remember my first tick bite years ago, and when I asked for help to remove it, being grossly engorged I was teased about being skittish. Looking back I had good reason. Since then I’ve been bitten several times, and because of the first experience the next few were likely not removed properly either. So I thought after my experiences I’d try to warn others before they live a life of pain, confusion and inadequate medical care due to the lack of knowledge. FIRST LINE of DEFENSE: PREVENTION! PREVENTION! PREVENTION! I can’t stress enough to try to prevent getting bitten in the first place. (There are still too many unknowns to even the medical community, especially with all of the associated diseases now linked to Lyme disease and tick bites. So prevention is the key! 1-Treat your outdoor clothing (permethrin) you can find it at any sporting good shop and follow the directions. Even spray the inside of your hunting clothing. Let it dry before wearing it. 2-DO check for ticks every time you come in, and if staying out for any length of time. 3- Remove clothing outside if possible, especially secondary layers and place in the dryer for 10-15 minutes to kill any that may be lingering. 4-Shower immediately using your hands soaped so you can feel any bumps or small raises on your skin. This is how I found a few. They will feel a bit like skin tags or even a pricker. 5-Stand in front of a full length mirror and check all areas, finding a buddy (wife, spouse or parent if a child) to look in places you can’t see. Those are some of the areas they like to hide. 6-If you find one use a pointed pair of tweezers or tick puller and get as close to the skin as possible to pull it up. Don’t squeeze so hard you squish it. 7-ID the tick and especially if it’s engorged, consider getting it tested. (There are some places that test and charge a fee, and a few that will test free but are or have been so backed up it takes too long to have proper information to start treatment. 8-Wash the site well and treat with antibiotic cream or at least soap. 9-Seek professional help if you are bit, again especially if it’s engorged. (New studies are proving that the tick no longer needs to be on for 24-48 hours to transmit the disease. They have found that some transmit upon bite when it has previously started to inject and left the last meal. These studies can be found at NIH.com) 10-Take the protocol from the Health Department with you to your doctor and insist that it’s followed. https://www.guideline.gov/summaries/summary/49320? 11-Watch for signs of rash (not just the bulls eye, but any kind of rash), severe flu like feelings, joint pain, confusion, tighter than normal muscle tone, pain in feet, heart palpations, high or low grade fever, swollen glands, etc.… (You can find a list of other symptoms on line or contact a local support group) and if they persist, seek a Lyme Literate MD. You may need to find a support group to inquire of one, as Susquehanna County has yet to train in this field.
