Hawks and Eagles and Owls, Oh, My...

Getting an up-close look at hawks, eagles and owls usually isn't easy, but a program that will be offered October 12th at the Northern Wayne Community Library in Lakewood will give you the chance.

Bill Streeter, director of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center, will be bringing his road show "Close Encounters with Birds of Prey," which features a Saw-Whet Owl, an American Kestrel, a Great Horned Owl, a Peregrine Falcon, a Red-Tailed Hawk and a Golden Eagle, not to mention Streeter himself.

Streeter rehabilitates injured raptors and has been doing it for more than 30 years. His center down in Pike County, near Milford, has the facilities needed to treat and care for injured or orphaned birds of prey. Most of the birds treated at the center are returned to the wild, but a small percentage are left too impaired to survive in the wild even after their wounds have healed. These are the sort of birds he uses for his educational lecture-demonstrations.

Bill Steeter with Julia

The star of the show or, at least the biggest bird Streeter will bring, is a Golden Eagle named Julia, who collided with a car more than a decade ago in Wyoming. The mountain-dwelling Golden Eagle is found out West and is a rarity in our region; none are known to nest here, Streeter says. The Bald Eagle is, of course, a national emblem, but the Golden Eagle — with its smaller beak and bigger, more powerful legs and feet — is much handsomer than the eagles we see with some frequency along the Delaware.

Streeter's show-and-tell will last about an hour and will cover such topics as wildlife rehabilitation, the relationship between predator and prey, specific adaptations of the birds present and various issues facing wildlife today.

The program will start at 7 p.m. The Northern Wayne Community Library is on the Crosstown Highway (Pa. Route 370) in Lakewood, right next door to the Preston School. The program is free to the public, but the library is asking for voluntary contributions of Scotch tape, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, Clorox wipes, hand soap or dish liquid — the everyday supplies the library uses. For more information, you can call the library at 570-798-2444.

For more information on the Delaware Valley Raptor Center, you can visit its website at www.dvrconline.org. The site is loaded with interesting and useful information about the center and its work and the raptors that live in or visit our region.
