Lumberjacks and Chainsaw Carvers

The 36th Sullivan County Fall Festival will be held  October 8 and 9, 2016 on Columbus Day weekend. Spectators are encouraged to attend at the Sullivan County Fairground, 4430 Route 154, Forksville for the annual lumberjack and chainsaw carving competitions.  The excitement begins on Saturday with men and women competing in Ax Throwing, Log Rolling, Men’s Crosscut, Jack & Jill Crosscut, One Man Bucking, Springboard Chop and Hot Saw Competitions.

Sunday’s event includes a chainsaw obstacle course designed for the local loggers of Sullivan County. These loggers display the skills of the work they do every day. This unique competition is based on time, skill and safety. The loggers must maneuver through a series of precision cuts with a chainsaw and end up with the falling of a 20ft pole.

Both days includes the Mid-Atlantic National Chainsaw Carving Competition, approximately 15 or more experienced and artistic carvers traveling from different states around the east coast to compete in a two day carving event. The carvers begin by creating a masterpiece from a 8' log.

Spectators watch in amazement as the carvings come to life with artistic style within just two days. On Sunday, three local artists and three carvers judge the masterpiece carvings and prize money is awarded to the carvers in several different categories.

Carvers also participate in the special “1 hour" competition each day where they produce a carving from a 3' x 18" rough log, which is then auctioned to the public.  Part of the proceeds from the auction go to the carver bringing in the highest bid for his carving, the remaining proceeds help the chamber pay prize monies to the lumberjack and chainsaw carvers competitors.

Be sure to enjoy the other activities of the festival.  Free entertainment with Top Shelf Band on Saturday and 5 Man Trio Band on Sunday performing on the outdoor stage.  Juried crafts of many kinds, variety vendors,  quilt show/sale, art expo, pumpkin painting and a large variety of good food will be available for all to enjoy.  For information, please call the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce at 570-482-4088.

Confused About The Medicare Services?

Don’t know what Part A and B are? What Part D? Then don’t forget the supplemental insurance that needs to cover the other 20% that Medicare does not. Also, did you know that the Annual Open Enrollment Period is from October 15th-December 7th?

Did you know the B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. provides services to support those aged 60 and older to stay safe and independent in their homes? Did you know we have volunteer programs? And did you know we have many other services and programs available to those aged 60 and older?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, come join us at the Hallstead/Great Bend Library (135 Franklin Ave. Hallstead, Pa) on Friday, September 30th at 10:00 a.m. for a presentation by the B/S/S/T AAA, Inc. on our APPRISE program and other services.  Reservations are not required but appreciated and can be made by calling 1-800-982-4346 by September 28th.

B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. are funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging; the United Way of Bradford County; the United Way of Susquehanna County; and the Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Tioga County Commissioners.
