Pet of the Week

Ringo Starr

Our Ringo Star may not be as famous as the original, but he sure has a lot of fans at the shelter! Comical, affectionate, smart, and playful, what he lacks in musical ability he makes up for in adorableness.  Neutered, UTD, micro-chipped, and 8 years old, our "Beagle Beatle" is a warm and friendly guy just looking for place to call home whether it is a foster or furever one.  Please give Ringo a chance and find out what “Beaglemania" is all about.

If Ringo could talk he would surely spread the word of "Peace,Love, and Drool" to remind you that Woofstock is only a few days away!  We have an amazing lineup of musicians this year you won’t want to miss.  Please join us in celebrating our 5th Year Anniversary!

Also a very special thank you to Montrose Motors and everyone who donated and made it possible for us to have our new Waggin' Wagon just in time for our special day.  Our dogs including Ringo, will be riding in style to Woofstock!

Fun Fact: It is rumored that at the end of the Beatles song "A Day In the Life”, Paul McCartney recorded an ultrasonic whistle audible only to dogs for his beloved Shetland sheepdog, Martha. Adopt Ringo or one of his dog friends and make beautiful music together.

Explore the Harford Fair History

Franklin Hall, on right, the only original building of the Soldiers’ Orphans’ School

This year at the Harford Fair, the Harford Historical Society will continue its mission of preserving the history of the area by honoring past graduates of the Soldiers’ Orphans’ School at the Fair’s log cabin.  The school began as the Franklin Academy, in 1831 and held its first term as a school for Civil War orphans on November 7, 1865.  Over the years, the school educated many well known people including W.L. Thacher, Cyrus C. Carpenter and Galusha A. Grow, “Father of the Homestead Act.”   A diploma and several family pictures of a 1890 graduate, Victor Snover, will be on display this year.

Only one original building of the school exists, however, people curious about the Civil War era will be interested in examining other photographs which show how classrooms, the bakery, chapel, staff housing and other buildings looked in the 1800’s.   The Harford Historical Society maintains the building as a museum and opens it to the public on the second weekend of every month during its monthly used book sales.  In the museum, one can see items from the 1800’s and early 1900’s.  Some artifacts have been rescued from the dirt and old foundations and some have been donated by Harford residents and others.

On August 11, 1923, the Soldiers Orphan’s School held a reunion.  A large picture of this reunion was taken, showing many of the graduates’ families and children sitting or standing in front of the existing building.  This picture will be on display at the Fair.   Unfortunately, only a few of these people are identified.  If you can supply any information about this photograph, the Harford Historical Society would very much like to add this information to its historical records.

For those interested in delving further into the history of the area, a 374 page paperback book titled “Soldiers Orphan School” has been published by the Harford Historical Society and will be on sale at the log cabin display.  The book contains reports, reunion notes, historical documents, a list of yearly graduates, newspaper articles about the school and much more.
