Harford Fair Seeks 2016 Volunteers

Do you want to do something to help the community and also feel good about doing it? The Harford Fair is looking for you. There are lots of jobs to do in preparation for the fair as well as for off-season events held on the fairgrounds. You are welcome to come to help out.

Whether it is helping to clean buildings, painting, doing general repairs, helping set up displays, maintaining the grounds, or sitting in buildings during the fair, there is something for everyone to volunteer doing.  Specific departments in need of volunteers include Fine Arts, Floral Hall, the Little Red School House, the Information Center and Vegetable Hall.

The Harford Agricultural Society’s Youth Board recently volunteered to do some painting at the fairgrounds. Pictured (l-r) are: Leah Noldy, Emily Supancik, Maggie Kowalewski, Austin Graham, Laurren Whitney, Jolie Winemiller.

The fair continues to thrive because of community involvement. Entries of prize-winning fruits and vegetables, art work, photography, baked goods, school projects, crafts, animals, and demonstrations all draw the thousands of visitors to the fair each year.

This year marks the 159th anniversary of one of the few truly agricultural fairs which still exists in Pennsylvania. Based on tradition, this event takes year-round planning, work and preparation by countless individuals.

So if you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to hfair@nep.net or call the fair office at 570-434-4300. Be prepared to leave your name, a telephone number or email address where you can be contacted and the department or type of volunteering you are interested in doing. Fair passes and fair bucks for Harford Fair food stands are distributed in appreciation of the help, depending on the amount of time individuals volunteer. Thank you in advance for planning to help out. Enjoy the fair August 22-27, 2016.

Pet of the Week

Fred

This sweet and gentle lad is Fred, a 9 year old, neutered, Shepherd mix who has not had it easy. Found as a stray and trying to fend for himself, this good natured soul has a growth on his lip which makes it very difficult to even eat.  We are looking for a foster or forever home so this boy can recuperate and move on with his life. Giving Fred a chance and a safe, comfortable, loving environment truly would be an act of kindness.

Won't you please also consider donating towards his medical bill? He is scheduled for his surgery on July 27th and we can't wait to see this lovely fur friend on the road to recovery.  Please keep sweet Fred in your thoughts!

Fun Fact:Paul Zak, a professor at Claremont University in California, found that a dog's brain releases oxytocin-the love hormone-when he/she interacts with humans and dogs.  The human brain does the same when we hug or kiss. There are lots of these love bugs at our shelter right now waiting to be loved and love you right back.
