Arrow Of Light

On February 22nd Cub Scout Pack 81 held its 2016 Arrow of Light and Cross-Over Ceremony.  The Arrow of Light rank is the final and highest rank that can be achieved in Cub Scouting, and the only Cub Scout badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

The ceremony began with the Tiger den, Wolf den, Bear den, Webelos I and Webelos II dens leading with the Pledge of Allegiance. Then Cubmaster Terry Rockwell conducted a uniform inspection followed by a pizza dinner for our pack families and guests. Immediately following den awards the highest award in Cub Scouts,“The Arrow of Light”, earned by Webelos that have been active participants in their den and are ready to join a Boy Scout troop was presented to Luke Hilling, son of Robert and Kathleen Hilling, and Reilly Potter son of Donald and Kristin Potter.

The Arrow of Light symbol is made up of an arrow, which points the way to a good life and a rising sun, which symbolized the constant new challenges provided by Scouting and by life itself.  The seven candles in the emblem represent the seven rays in the Arrow of Light symbol: Wisdom, Courage, Self-control, Justice, Faith, Hope, and Love.

Boy Scout Troop 89 then performed the Cross-Over bridge ceremony. To become a boy scout, the new scout candidate must officially take the scout oath. As a part of that oath, he promises to obey the Scout Law. The Scout Law is the foundation of scouting. Its twelve points guide the scout throughout his life: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent.  Luke and Reilly crossed the bridge from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting, continuing on the adventure along the scouting trail.

60th Anniversary

Ebb and Betsy Elbrecht, Halstead, Pa celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, March 3, 2016.

Ebb is a veteran of the Korean War. He worked at the Halstead Foundry for a number of years until an explosion caused serious injury to both of his legs. After recouperation, he went to work at the Blue Ridge School District where he became head custodian until retiring in the mid 1990’s.

Ebb and Betsy take a moment to pose with long time friend Susquehanna County Commissioner Alan Hall at the VFW Ladies Auxiliary chicken & biscuit dinner

Betsy, after being seriously injured in a car accident, devoted herself to the service of others, especially the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She has “maned” the cash drawer for the Auxiliary for decades, and is a very family face at their chicken & biscuit dinners.

The loving couple have 5 children, Julie, Aubrey, Jennifer, Allan & Jay, 11 grand children and 9 1/2 (one is on the way!) great-grand children.

Congratulations, Betsy and Ebb!

Shaking It Up in the Classroom

My name is Kaelynn Brant. I am in Mrs. Button’s 3rd grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary School. I am also a Susquehanna County Dairy Maid. This is my second year participating in the dairy promotion program.

Recently I decided to do a dairy promotion right in my own classroom. This consisted of Brooke Marvin, the Alternate Susquehanna County Dairy Princess, talking to the kids about how she promotes the dairy industry in the community.

Susquehanna County Dairy Maid Kaelynn Brant and Alternate Princess Brooke Marvin visit Mrs. Button’s classroom at Blue Ridge Elementary School

Kendra Brant, my sister and fellow Dairy Maid, passed out pencils and cow erasers to the children. I demonstrated how to make shaker pudding with instant pudding mix and milk. Each child got a container with pudding mix and milk and were instructed to “shake it up” until it became a thick pudding consistency. Then they got to eat it!

After the yummy treat Brooke and I talked about the importance of having three servings of dairy every day of yogurt, cheese or milk. And most importantly ice cream for dessert! Kendra asked everyone if they would like a copy of the shaker pudding recipe and handed them out to those who wanted one. Those kids thought it would be fun to “shake it up” at home!

Everyone appeared to enjoy our visit and thanked us all for coming in and sharing our knowledge of dairy and our dairy treat.

Pet of the Week

Berlin

Berlin is a cheerful, obedient, and eager to learn girl. She came to True Friends as a stray and was never claimed. This beautiful German Shepherd is housebroken, spayed, mico-chipped, wormed, and vaccinated. She is a strong, agile, and well-muscled dog who needs a firm but loving handler. Alert with a high activity level, Berlin will benefit from ongoing mental and physical stimulation, as well as human companionship, socialization, and training. She would prefer to be the only pet.  Berlin is looking for an active family who is willing to give her the attention and devotion she deserves. If you haven't already, be sure to visit our new and very much improved website, truefriendsawc.com.

Fun Fact: The German Shepherd is hailed as the world's leading police, military, and guard dog. A more loyal and loving best friend would be hard to find.

Extending Your Growing Season

Back by popular demand! Would you like to extend your growing season by 2 weeks or more? Join the Penn State Master Gardeners for this great program on April 2, from 9-11 am at Salt Springs State Park. In this class you will be provided details on how to make and use low tunnels for season extension (spring & fall) and insect exclusion.

You will have the opportunity to make and purchase materials for hoops (maximum space between hoops is 30 inches…how many you need depends on size of your bed) and learn how to bend them on bending jigs. Master Gardener George Schreck will also show you how to clip the tunnel material onto the hoop.
To register visit: Montrose Adult School www.montroseadultschool.org. Click the Classes link. You can print out a registration form under the HOW TO REGISTER section. To see what classes are offered, click Nature and Country Living to see the Master Gardener classes. Simply mail the form to the Montrose Adult School. You may also just simply listen to the discussion and observe the “bending of hoops.”
