Franklin Forks – Alliance 131 will hold a contest, “graham bread, potato salad, cucumber pickles and currant jelly,” in connection with their regular meeting, in Alliance hall, Feb. 16. Suitable prizes will be given. Judges to be the tallest woman and the shortest man. This, with the regular program, will insure an interesting time.
South Montrose – Cleatus Kiefer is the new proprietor of the pool room.
Montrose – E. L. Estus, of Dimock, and Frank Hill, of Rush, have purchased new Chevrolet touring cars of L. H. Sprout and Sons. Another carload of Chevrolets is expected by this firm in a short time, nearly all of which have been sold. ALSO One of the largest thermometers in the world is being placed in front of Burns’ drug store. The instrument is nine feet tall and guaranteed accurate. Valentine & Co., the Valspar people, had 1,000 of these thermometers made at a cost of $22,000. Montrose is very fortunate to get one of the thousand. It runs from 80 below to 120 above zero. ALSO A great treat is in store for all who attend the Lincoln Tea at Colonial Hall, Saturday evening, it being a fine Victrola concert from one of Mrs. Gamble’s Victrolas.
Forest City – The first golden wedding to take place in the history of this place occurred last Saturday when Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zaller observed the event. They were married in Austria, but for many years have been residents of Forest City.
New Milford – Monday was a very busy day for the landlords of the two hotels here. W. E. Carpenter moved from the upper hotel to the Walker House and Hallie Lewis, who has been conducting the Walker House for some months, moved to the upper hotel, which will hereafter be called the Lewis House.
Dimock – Thomas Donahoe, of Binghamton, who fell under the ice wagon he was driving on Feb. 3rd, died on Wednesday night of his injuries in the City Hospital. He is survived by his wife and three brothers—John, Patrick and James Donahoe, of Dimock.
Elk Lake – James Bishop, who has the contract for filling the Auburn creamery ice house, has a number of teams drawing ice from the lake this week. Green Brothers are handling the ice saws.
Rush – Frank Everett, who was kicked by a horse and had his leg broken about two weeks ago, is doing nicely at the home of his brother, D. J. Everett, of Jersey Hill. Mr. Everett was riding on a market wagon, where the seat was at the extreme front, and in going over a knoll, the horse kicked, and being sharp shod, mangled his leg fearfully. He realized what had happened and managed to crawl over the seat before he fainted. When he revived he drove to his brother’s farm, where he was cared for. Dr. Fry, of Rush, reduced the fracture. ALSO Mrs. Russell Very is moving from her place, at Rush Center, to her son’s, Walter, near Montrose. Clark Larue purchased her farm.
South Harford – The excitements of last week were as follows: Book Club, Wed.; surprise party for Mrs. Robert Hudson, Thursday evening; ball at Fred Anderson’s Fri. evening; and a birthday party for Casper Cary, Saturday.
Transue (Auburn Twp.) – Miss Ethel Barnes, of this place and William Place, of Edinger Hill, were united in marriage, Wednesday evening, Feb. 2, 1916, at Rev. W. B. Arnold’s, of Skinner’s Eddy. From there the newly married couple left for his sister’s, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Robinson, of Schottsville, where they spent the week-end. On Saturday evening the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Place made them a party. Many nice presents were given to them.
East Kingsley – Simon Button, while working on the railroad section Tuesday morning, was hit by a train. Just how the accident occurred is not known, as no one was with him at the time and his lifeless body was found by his companions sometime after he was hit. The funeral was held Thursday with burial at Wilmarth cemetery. He is survived by his widow and three small children.
Ararat – Plenty of mud. The roads are getting real bad. Some of the milk teams that draw milk from Gelatt to Orson can’t make the trip and return the same day and consequently they stay over and return the next day. We hope the old bear will see his shadow and snow would be welcome in place of rain and mud.
Bridgewater Twp. – Charles J. Post [of Post’s Pond] is busy these days harvesting ice, having a contract with the Knickerbocker Ice Co., of New York, the company agreeing to take all he can furnish. He is working 30 men and 9 horses. The ice he is loading is of a clear, crystal quality from 9 to 12½ inches thick. Mr. Post informs us that he has facilities for loading 40 cars in 10 hours, but is handicapped by the fact that it is impossible for the Lehigh Valley to place cars on the switch as rapidly as he can fill them.
Friendsville – Mrs. Ellen Nora O’Donnell Donnelly, aged 81 years, died at her home near this place on January 29, 1916. She is survived by ten children: James, Miles, Frank and Ellen of Friendsville; Margaret, of Binghamton; Martha and Frances, of Portland Oregon; Mrs. John Connor, of Smethport, Pa; Mrs. Chas. Smith, of Waterbury, Conn.; and Julia A. Donnelly, of New York city. She is also survived by one brother, Thomas J. O’Donnell, of St. Joseph, Pa. and two sisters, Mrs. Michael Sorter, of Adrian, Michigan and Mrs. Mary Johnson, of Waterbury, Conn. The funeral was held from St. Francis Xavier’s church; Rev. J. P. Dunne celebrated mass. The pallbearers were: Daniel O’Connell, Edward O’Connell, Lawrence Coleman, Christopher Coleman, Daniel Fitzgerald and James Lynch.
Roads – We understand a movement is on foot and a petition numerously signed, asking the state to take over the road from New Milford to Jackson. And why should not this be done? It is certainly one of the most traveled roads in the county, and one of the main lines of highway leading from the eastern part of the county to the County Seat. It would especially accommodate Jackson, Gibson, Thompson, Ararat, Herrick, New Milford, Harmony, Oakland, Susquehanna and Lanesboro. A fine county bridge has lately been built at Lakeside, the grade is good, with no heavy hills, and the traffic from Gibson and Jackson to the railroad station at New Milford is large. Perhaps few, if any, roads in the county have more business. The distance is less than eight miles. At Jackson it intersects the old Tunkhannock valley state route, which at some not distant day may be a trolley line from Nicholson through Glenwood, South Gibson, Smiley, Gelatt, Jackson, North Jackson, and through to Susquehanna. An investigation of the map will show the many advantages and importance of the section of the road between New Milford and Jackson, connecting as it would, with the state road leading from Montrose to New Milford, and forming a main and very desirable highway across the county from West to East.

Letter of the Law
By Jason J. Legg
In September 2012, Roysce Haynes was arrested in Philadelphia for the murder of his girldfriend, Atiya Perry. Haynes admitted that they had a domestic dispute and that he had strangled her to death – and the autopsy confirmed that she had been strangled. The autopsy also revealed that Perry had been seven weeks pregnant. Based upon the autopsy results, Haynes was also charged with murder of an unborn child under 18 Pa. C.S. § 2604. After a jury trial, Haynes was convicted of third degree murder for killing Atiya Perry, and third degree murder of an unborn child for killing the 7-week old unborn child in Perry’s womb.
Third degree murder provides for a maximum sentence of up to 40 years. Third degree murder of an unborn child provides for the same punishment as third degree murder itself, i.e., a maximum period of incarceration of up to 40 years. The Commonwealth, however, sought to use another statutory provision (42 Pa C.S. § 9715(a)) that mandates that any person being sentenced for a murder conviction who also has a prior murder conviction must be sentenced to life imprisonment. The case law has interpreted this statute to include multiple homicides that occur at the same time if the defendant is found guilty of both murders. In that situation, the defendant would be sentenced on the first homicide under the normal sentencing guidelines, and the sentence for the second homicide would fall under the statutory mandatory period of life imprisonment for a subsequent murder.
The sentencing court refused to impose the mandatory life sentence because murder of an unborn child is defined in separate section of the Crimes Code – it is not contained in the section that defines murder. Because there was some ambiguity as to whether the Legislature intended to include murder of an unborn child within those qualifying offenses for a life sentence under the mandatory minimum statute, the sentencing court determined that it could not impose a life sentence. Instead, Haynes was sentenced to a period of incarceration of 20 to 40 years for the murder of Atiya Perry, and an addition 15 to 30 years for the murder of Perry’s 7-week old unborn child. The sentencing court ran these counts consecutive, which made the final sentence 35 years to 70 years.
Both the Commonwealth and Haynes appealed the sentence. The Commonwealth contended that the sentencing court erred in not sentencing Haynes to life imprisonment as he had two third degree murder convictions which triggered 42 Pa. C.S. § 9715(a). The Superior Court disagreed and affirmed the decision of the sentencing court. The Superior Court concluded that the Legislature had not specifically included murder of an unborn child within the definition of “murder” that triggers life imprisonment under § 9715(a).
As to Haynes’ appeal, he contended that the sentencing court failed to consider his mental health issues and rehabilitative needs. Haynes appeared to argue that the sentence was excessive based upon the decision to run the sentences consecutive (35 to 70 years), rather than concurrent (20 to 40 years). The Superior Court rejected both arguments summarily. The record noted that the sentencing court had considered Haynes’ mental health issues, and an appellate court will not generally substitute its judgment for that of the sentencing court unless there is an abuse of the sentencing court’s discretion.
As to the sentence itself, these appeals generally focus on whether the sentencing court used the applicable sentencing guidelines as required by law. If a sentencing court issues a sentence within the applicable guideline range, a defendant generally cannot challenge the sentence absent some fundamental error in the sentencing proceeding. In this case, the guideline ranges for third degree murder and third degree murder of an unborn child were the same - and provided for a minimum sentence between 8 and 20 years (the maximum minimum sentence allowed by law). Because both minimum sentences fell within the guideline ranges, Haynes could not challenge the discretion of the sentencing court. The Superior Court refused to consider whether running the sentences consecutive, rather than concurrent, was an abuse of discretion because Haynes had failed to properly raise that issue in his brief.

“Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.” ~Author Unknown
“Te amo” in Spanish and Latin, “ Je t’aime” in French, “ Ich liebe dich” in German, “S’agapo” in Greek, “Aloha wau ia oe” in Hawaiian, ”Ya tebya lyublya” in Russian, “Phom rak khun” to females and “Chan rak khun” to males in Thai, “Ninapenda wewe” in Swahili, “Wo ai ni” in Mandarin, and “Mi aime jou” in Creole—How ever you express it, in English, it means “I Love You”. Three simple
but magical words that send the heart whirling up the spiral of life and your outlook as well as your cheeks rosy with joy. Many customs, as well as languages, originating from other countries, can be found at your local Library Location. You may be surprised to learn the history of Valentine’s Day and that in other parts of the world, it is not celebrated with cardboard hearts filled with chocolates or elaborate floral displays. Many have learned over time that a single rose can say volumes, as can a simple handwritten, expressive note when given from the heart. Many Valentine craft ideas can also be found in the titles just waiting for your attention on the Library shelves. Make a date with yourself to go, explore and enjoy all of what your Library Location has to offer.
This is a very interesting discovery—a small town in the French Alps, Grenoble, France, has introduced the “World’s First Short Story Vending Machines”. At present, there are a total of eight vending machines scattered throughout the town. They allow anyone to select a short story of either a one, three or five minute length, and the machine prints it out on a roll that is very similar to that of a grocery store receipt. Imagine yourself riding the subway or train on the way to work and having a short story in your pocket, ready to combat possible boredom? Could this become an international trend? Would you be interested in trying it—or would you rather have a full-length book at your fingertips?
Exciting news from the Susquehanna Branch Library—A Beautiful Americana Quilt has been lovingly created by the Susquehanna Library Quilters Group, to be raffled off, with proceeds going to the Susquehanna Library Branch. You may purchase a raffle ticket from any of the four Library Locations. The tickets are $10.00 each and only 200 tickets will be sold, so don’t delay. You can’t win if you don’t play! The drawing will be held on September 16th, right in time for snuggling under a quilt on chilly nights.
As I put the finishing touches on some handmade valentines, I will leave you with this thought:
“I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.” ~Author Unknown

While America Slept
Commentary By 'R.G.A.' with Kerri Ellen Wilder
While America slept, Europe slept too. Europe’s sleep, like America’s, is not a healthy REM sleep to refresh and re-invigorate. Instead, the sleep of both is much more akin to that of an inebriate perilously close to death. Although America’s condition is very serious indeed, our Allies--Great Britain and the NATO countries of Continental Europe--are GRAVELY decayed culturally. This week’s commentary describes just how grave. The report below is provided by my associate, who goes by the “nom de plume” of ‘R.G.A.’ RGA is a British citizen on the ground in England. Please read his sobering report (written in Standard British English); he describes just how grave the situation is “across the pond
RGA: All is going to plan . . . The Leftists and Globalists want the collapse... that's why they set it up, set it rolling, and are doing next to nothing to prevent it . .
THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE – ISLAMISM AND SOCIALISM
Day by day, it is becoming ever more obvious how hand-in-glove these two are. And how more radical elements of Socialism, are being co-opted by Islamists into furthering their agenda. The further Left – the more in bed they clearly are. Totalitarians are like magnets – drawn together by some unseen attraction. This is the counter-intuitive ‘Red-Green Alliance’.
Please read on and share your thoughts. In recent months, the Left are showing their hand. Clearly, these are treasonous acts, willfully endangering and impoverishing their electorate - all in the name of limp-wristed 'humanitarianism' that isn't even based on any logical argument. The sheeple will believe it, but those of us with open minds can see that there are deeper, darker ideological reasons for legislation like this.
It’s the deliberate implosion of Europe as a means of engineering a crisis, so the Left can present themselves as the solution, thereby saving the otherwise sinking EUSSR [European Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] project. Something's up. The right has been on a steady rise before the migrant invasion, and with the EU economy teetering, and Grexit/Brexit [Greek exit/British exit (from European Union)] threats - the EUSSR elites had to do something.
This is Ordo Ab Chao - (order out of chaos) - create the problem but disguise who is to blame, fan the flames, then present yourself as the solution. The Hegellian Dialectic - Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis (or problem-reaction-solution) - has pretty much dictated all global politics for generations. So they will implode Europe and divert us with economic catastrophe and civil/ethnic tension and terror they grew for this very purpose
THE LEFTIST TROJAN HORSE PLOT
Bringing in Muslims en masse serves numerous functions:
1) long-term forced homogeneity to erode national and cultural identity (as per the UN’s Peter Sutherland), so that the 'new European' identity emerges which can be moulded and manipulated to the new EUSSR masters will.
2) importing people who will vote for the parties who give them the most goodies, are the most accommodating of Islam - who also have high birth rates to ensure the trend continues.
3) overloading the welfare state to precipitate economic breakdown which will be followed by the desired social and civil unrest. It helps to have an immigrant group who will be very likely to claim benefits and bring in their kin under 'right to family life' legislation, further burdening the state.
We will be so consumed by media reports of terrorism, ethnic and social division that the people will cry out for the solution. The solution will be offered in terms of getting together, solidarity, helping European brothers and sisters, protecting each other, tolerance and respect - i.e., EU Army, loss of border control, greater EU integration, further loss of sovereignty, imposition of draconian surveillance, police state, hate crime, etc. legislation. We will massively lose our freedoms as the price to resolve the crises.
WEAPONISING ISLAM FOR SOCIALIST ENGINEERING
The Left will also use this coming chaos to attack anyone who gets in the way of this agenda as haters/Islamophobes/selfish little Englanders/bigots etc. They will use it (like they are already in Germany) to attack/marginalise/put in prison political rivals on the Right.
The Left is using Islam as a crude battering ram to force through its Cultural Marxist agenda on numerous levels. Through enforcing Shariah blasphemy laws as a pretext to curb 'freedom of speech', Muslims are a vociferous and agitating group that will push through multiculturalism and political correctness by incessant grievance-mongering, agitation, violence, lawfare, victimhood, and politics.
Cultural Marxists have shaved decades off their Plan, by their alliance with the most politically active group in the world - Islam knows no actual or theological boundaries between religion and politics. Through this, the Left will be able to bring about a crisis or series of crises that will cause social, economic and civil breakdown so they can have their 'revolution'. Islam is beyond criticism by the Left and under its complete protection – because it is to be their instrument of civilizational destruction. Reread this sentence!
Two other Leftist ideas that are aided by the mass immigration are the Cloward-Piven strategy (causing a country’s economy to collapse by overloading the welfare state), and the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan (basically white genocide through enforced homogenisation of a population, so they lose national and religious identity and are therefore more malleable and controllable).
TIGERS AND USEFUL IDIOTS
I assume that the left thinks they will be able to tame the tiger that is Islam. But it reminds me of the following Winston Churchill quote: “Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.”
The question for me is - "who is the Useful Idiot of whom?" - and I think that the Left, in their arrogance and short-sighted dogmatic worldview - are dismissing 1400 years of Islamic supremacism. Radical Islam is one tiger that is not going to climb back in its cage, now it’s been freed and has a taste for flesh.
Its desires are simple; they are laid out in the Qur’an/Hadith/Sira – they want global supremacy under Shariah and Islamic Governance via the mechanism of Hijrah, out-breeding, and all forms of Jihad. It ain’t complicated, just read the Qur’an.

WHAT’S NEXT?
It’s a race at the moment to see if the Right resurgence can come into power before the Left generates the crisis point. The Left and Globalists are implementing structures of control for their totalitarian vision - at the local, EU and UN levels.
And yes, I can see the UK referendum being cancelled, and I can see elections being cancelled, if things get bad enough! I strongly believe that we are living in the most dangerous time in European history. The whole world is a powder keg at the moment
Nota Bene: I, Kerri Ellen Wilder, “met” RGA by way of reading his thoughts in the comment section following a story in a British newspaper. Being that he left his email address, I contacted him to inquire if I might receive approval to quote him in this column and provide him attribution in this column. RGA and I emailed back and forth until we established each other’s bona fides, at which point RGA granted me approval for use of his entire intellectual product in this commentary. But, he requested specifically that his real name not be used in this column. He sadly noted that he had already had his tyres [tires] slashed before for expressing his political thoughts. In his opinion and experience it is no longer safe to express “unpopular” [politically incorrect] thoughts in Great Britain. Think about that! Do you still feel completely safe expressing your thoughts? If America continues in slumber, how long before Europe’s fate is ours?
RGA has kindly warned us of the process being used to extinguish liberty’s last light in Europe. Awaken those around you who are still slumbering; there may yet be time for America, but only just!

The medical advice you get from friends and family
Mrs. Robinson had a cold and went into the pharmacy for some cough syrup. As she was paying for her medicine, she said to the pharmacist, “As my mother used to say ‘Starve and a cold and feed a fever’ right?” Wrong. Starving is never the right answer. Your body needs nutrients to stay healthy. By not eating, you are depriving yourself of the energy you need to get better.
Medical myths abound and they are given freely by well-meaning people. Some suggest that putting toothpaste on an acne eruption will heal it faster. Not so. Some toothpastes contain high amounts of hydrogen peroxide (much more than you can buy at a pharmacy). Instead, use diluted vinegar or salt water. Or ask the pharmacist or your doctor which product is most effective.
Cutting off warts is dangerous. There have been many cases where people cut their finger warts and end up getting an infection because the blade or instrument used was dirty. Again, there are products designed to alleviate warts safely.
Butter for burns? No. If the burn is deep, using butter will cause an infection. Butter is not sterile and the skin has already lost its protective function due to the burn. When butter is placed on a defenseless wound, it can introduce bacteria.
Is honey good for a baby? Honey, which can be contaminated with spores of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, and can cause botulism, should not be given to children under age 12 months.
Do not try to remove excessive ear wax with ear candles. They are dangerous and do not work well. - Use over-the-counter ear wax removal products or go to your doctor who can use an ear wax syringe.
Kids get sick, a fact the pharmacist is certain you know. But here are a few things you should avoid if your child has a cold. Restrict milk and milk products when your child has a cough or fever. Dairy products are mucus-producing and just make things worse. Also, do not give your child soda, fruit juice or tea when he has diarrhea or vomiting. Use an oral rehydration solution like Pedialyte, or a beverage like Gatorade for an older child. Never give aspirin to children and teens, since it can be associated with Reye syndrome.
Never use a needle to “pop” a sty. A sty on the eyelid would be very close to the eyeballs. You may inadvertently injure your eyeball with the use of a sharp needle so near the eye. Instead, soak a clean towel in boiled water and use it to compress the sty. This helps improve blood circulation and softens the sty. You can also apply antiseptic eye cream on the sty which you can get at a pharmacy.
When a child wakes up with an earache, parents often resort to a number of home remedies, such as applying a warm or cold wash cloth on the outside of the ear, using a heating pad on the ear, or placing a few drops of olive oil in the ear. However, a pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, will likely provide more long term relief. Prescription numbing ear drops are also available for more severe earaches.
Mrs. Robinson learned a lot from the discussion with her pharmacist. She was not going to starve her cold anymore. Instead, she was going to go home and have a hot bowl of chicken soup with veggies.
