B-K Co-Workers Winners in 5K

Even though the day dawned blistering hot and humid, that didn’t wilt the spirits of those who participated in one of Susquehanna’s “Hometown Days” favorite events—the 5K Run/Walk. This year’s race had a new twist. A non-profit group with the most participants would win $100.00 for their group or organization. There was a “Minimum of Five to represent a group” rule, and participants representing an organization could include members, member’s children, grandchildren, parents, friends, etc.

Barnes-Kasson Co-Workers and Friends begin their Trek to Victory

The co-workers and friends from Barnes-Kasson Hospital filled that requirement, and more. Twenty-two individuals donned their blue Barnes-Kasson emblazoned T-shirts and walked the distance to victory. Congratulations to all! It must be noted that all proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk go to benefit the S.C.D.A. programs within the Susquehanna Community.

Enthusiasts Take Walk In The Past

On July 19th, a “Hungry for Local History” crowd braved the heat and humidity and listened intently as gifted Photographer, avid Historian, and local Resident, Jon C. Burdick regaled those in attendance with the history of our area. The presentation was once again presented by the Susquehanna Community Awareness Committee, in coordination with the Susquehanna United Methodist Church and was held in the air-conditioned Church Hall.

Jon C. Burdick

Mayor of Susquehanna Depot, Nancy Hurley was on hand to introduce Mr. Burdick. Mayor Hurley has been instrumental in forming “The Susquehanna Community Awareness Committee”, which will be presenting future events to cultivate more citizen participation and enjoyment.

Jon spoke about several topics, including the Erie railroad and the effects it has had on our area, businesses and factories of the past, and our local historical gem, “The Starrucca Viaduct”. Mr. Burdick brought many matted prints showing several points of interest regarding Susquehanna Depot and surrounding areas and spoke of their relevance to our Borough and the railroad. Some little-known facts came to light that were startling, some humorous. Jon passed the prints to the audience and strolled through the aisles, answering questions and pointing out details that may have been missed.

As with the first presentation, locations were not the only draw regarding the pictures, as stories and memories of local individuals who were railroaders, family members or beloved friends got the attendees talking amongst themselves. Local history buffs/audience members joined in the exchange and shared details that even those who have lived in the area all of their lives did not know.

One highlight of the evening was a “Pop Quiz” that brought as much laughter as it did facts. Framed and matted photos were available for purchase after the presentation.

Many thanks to Jon, Pastor Leanne Campbell for the use of the Church Hall, all of the folks who helped set-up, and take-down chairs, tables, etc., with the advertising, those who helped with the refreshments, Mayor Nancy Hurley and the Community Awareness Committee, but, most of all, all who braved the heat and attended. We are so glad you enjoyed it and hope you will plan to come to future events.

You can check out photos of the presentation on the “Susquehanna Community Development Association” and “Remember Susquehanna” Facebook pages and (soon) on the Borough of Susquehanna Depot Website at www.susquehannaborough.com.
