Health Fair At Mountain View

The nationwide push to teach and encourage healthy living in our schools has led the Mountain View School District to take some actions in the past few years to impact students’ health.  They have changed the lunch menus to include more whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, removed unhealthy snacks from the building, and increased the emphasis on the amount of exercise the students receive on a daily/weekly basis.

Pictured are Members of the planning committee for the First Annual Health Fair to be held at the Mountain View High School on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, gathered to finalize plans for the event. The day-long event will host a variety of over twenty-five tables where healthy living habits will be promoted.  Seated (l-r) are: Dr. Elaine Chichura, Consumer Science teacher; Robert Presley, high school principal; Erin Oakley, Food Service Director; Cindy Reynolds, retired teacher; Karen Voigt, acting superintendent;  Bridget Reed, sophomore member of the Youth Advisory Committee for the school foods program; Michele Pavelski, D.C. medicine; Katie Ezdebski, superintendent of Fine Arts Department at the Harford Fair.

To better emphasize the needs for changing to healthy living habits, the district will hold a Health Fair for all students in grades seven through twelve during the school day so that all students can participate.  Scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2015 under the direction of Erin Oakley, Food Service Director for the district, the Health Fair will be a day-long event with activities, related services, and community assistance to motivate the students to make positive and healthy behavior changes for themselves and share that knowledge with family, friends, and community.

While this is the first at the high school, the elementary school within the district has presented a variety of Health and Wellness events to educate students, staff, teachers, parents and the community.  Another one is planned for Wednesday, May 13, 2015, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the elementary school.  Included with this Health and Wellness event will be the Science Showcase and a parent workshop on internet safety.
