SCFLOA asks you to join them in marking the end to a long, cold, and snowy winter by breaking out for a spring walk in the woods. Everyone is welcome as we end winter with a visit to a property that has 20 acres of evergreen forest (red pine, white spruce, Norway spruce), Japanese larch trees. one acre of tulip poplar, black locust trees and a mix of northern hardwoods. We will see field edge cutbacks and plantings in the wildlife managed areas,

40 resurrected apple trees, a pond and get a good view of this property. Dick Schwab promises a few stories on honey locust trees, “the Appomatox tree” and life experiences from his 30+ years at the SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry near Syracuse, NY. Learn what you might be able to do with some parts of your forest or woodlot.

This event will start to gather at 830am at the Schwab property just off of Tripp Lake Road (Liberty Township road 813). The degree of walking difficulty is easy to moderate so please plan accordingly. Waterproof footwear is advised. Woods walk signs will indicate the road turnoff areas. Members of the SCFLOA Board of Directors will be guiding cars to the parking and meeting area.

8:30 to 9am - Arrival, registration. Meet and greet old and new friends. Coffee, hot chocolate, donuts will be offered by the -Thundering Hooves and Beating Hearts 4-H club.

There will be several stops as the walk progresses through different stages and types of forest cover. We will focus on red pine management and harvesting options, girdling as a management tool, tree planting under the red pine trees as part of the future management goals, conversion of some areas evergreen areas to a hardwood stand, other types of tree planting and tree protection.

Lunch, as soon as we are done walking is being offered by the Thundering Hooves and Beating Hearts 4-H club. The lunch meal will be wimpies, walking tacos, potato chips, dessert items, drinks - water, soda, juice, coffee, hot chocolate. Please help SCFLOA help this group of young people raise some money for their 4H club, while they feed us. There will be a cost for lunch.

Everybody Walk

Penn State Extension is again sponsoring Everybody Walk Across PA this spring. It is eight weeks of walking, March 30 to May 24, to improve health. Plus, we will virtually visit several of Pennsylvania’s State Parks.

Gather your family, friends or co-workers to form a team of up to five. Team members will try to average walking or exercising ten miles per week to meet the program’s goal. Walk with your team or on your own at a time and place convenient for you. You do not have to walk in the state parks, unless of course, you live close to a park. Team captains report the mileage for their team each week. Everyone receives weekly e-mail updates on the progress as we virtually visit the parks.

Each week will bring a new theme; beautiful vistas, dramatic waterfalls, unusual geologic features, family friendly hikes and much more. Along the way there will be tips on outdoor food safety and ideas for child friendly activities. Also find motivators to keep walking and strategies for eating more fruits and vegetables. All of this will keep everyone moving toward a healthier lifestyle.

The program is free but registration is required by March 29, 2015. Register or learn more about this event at http://extension.psu.edu/health/walk-across-pa or contact Karen Bracey at 570-836-3196 or kbracey@psu.edu.

Moderate activity, like walking reduces stress and fatigue. It improves mental alertness. Activity also strengthens bones and helps the heart and blood vessels. Combined with healthy eating, it can help to reduce or maintain body weight. Being active has been shown to lessen incidence of certain chronic diseases.

Spring is a great time to get outside and be more active. Eight weeks can help turn healthy behaviors into healthy habits. Take the first step and join in Everybody Walk Across PA 2015! Persons with all levels of physical ability are encouraged to take part. An exercise conversion chart will translate activities other than walking into miles for this program. While the goal is reaching at least 10 miles per week per person, there is no minimum required to participate.
