Misericordia To Host History Competition

DALLAS, Pa. – Misericordia University will host the National History Day (NHD) regional competition on Saturday, March 7 at the campus in Dallas, Pa. More than 300 students from middle schools and high schools in Luzerne (except Hazleton School District), Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Pike, Wayne, Wyoming, Monroe, and Sullivan counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania are expected to participate.

Pictured, from left are co-chairs Jessica Gardner, M.S.LIS, archivist, and Jennifer Black, Ph.D., assistant professor of history and government, Misericordia University

The daylong event is sponsored by NHD, a nonprofit educational organization that offers professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators, and yearlong academic programs to encourage students around the world to conduct and present original research on historical topics. The theme for the 2015 contest is “Leadership & Legacy in History,” which asks students to consider what it means to lead an event – as opposed to just being present – and what it means to leave a legacy – and not just an obituary – behind, according to national organizers.Students will complete at either the junior high (grades 6-8) or senior high (grades 9-12) level, and as part of a group or as an individual in four categories: performance, documentary, website and tabletop exhibit. Students can also compete as an individual at the junior or senior high level in the historical paper category.Students who place in the top two in each of the 18 categories are eligible to advance to the state competition at Millersville University in Millersville, Pa., in May. Winners from the Pennsylvania state competition will then compete at National History Day at the University of Maryland, College Park, Md., in June.

Annie Johnson, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow at Lehigh University, will discuss Saturday afternoon how technology has changed the way history is preserved in the digital age. Dr. Johnson will discuss technology-savvy careers in history and the humanities. The talk is part of an assortment of historical activities aimed to engage students in learning about their communities outside of the classroom.

“The field of digital history is really growing,” said event co-chair Jennifer Black, Ph.D., assistant professor of history and government at Misericordia University. “There have been so many changes in just the past few years. Students who are interested in history have more exciting career opportunities, many of them related to digital preservation and presentation. This is a great opportunity to introduce students to an exciting new profession and encourage them to develop their technological skills while engaging their love of history.”

“Being an archivist has changed dramatically over the past 10 years,” added Jessica Garner, M.S.LIS, archivist at the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library at Misericordia University, and NDH co-chair. “Not that long ago, research was done through the card catalogue and microfilm. Today, so much of what students have access to is online. They have thousands of historical resources available to them with the click of a mouse.”Garner hopes that NHD will inspire more young students to get involved with their local historical societies. “After working with local historical societies and organizations, I’ve seen firsthand the fantastic collections they hold, and the many resources that students can use to find out about the history that is all around them. As I have told many history students, if they want to work with history this area is full of opportunities to get hands-on experience.”The Misericordia University coordinators also will have exhibits from local historical societies on display in the Exhibit Hall, located in Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall Dudrick, Muth and Huntzinger Rooms 216-218 so students can see examples of what primary sources are available to them at the local level.Students most commonly compete with their schools, yet are welcome to apply independently. For additional information about NHD, please contact Jessica Reeder Garner by e-mail at archives@misericordia.edu or by telephone at (570) 674-6420. Registration is available online at http://libguides.misericordia.edu/NEPAhistoryday.
