Harford Ag Meeting Welcomes Public

If you were one of the 60,000 people who attended this year’s Harford Fair the third full week of August, you might be interested in becoming a member of the Harford Agricultural Society which puts on the Harford Fair each year. Because the fair is the largest community event in the area, involvement by the community is critical to the success of the fair. Harford Fair has a rich and long-time history in Susquehanna County. It is one of the few truly agricultural country fairs which exist today. The board encourages citizens to attend the regular meetings on the first Monday of each month, to join the fair association, or to make suggestions for next year’s fair. The fair, however, is not just a one week event in the county. Planning, preparation, and decisions about the fair continue throughout the other 51 weeks of the year.

The board of directors has an additional meeting each month. Reorganization occurred at the November meeting. Dr. Michael Kowalewski is the president, Jason Miller is first vice president, Cindy Reynolds is second vice president, Mark Pease is treasurer, and Marty Myers is the secretary.

The association meets the first Monday of each month at 7:30 PM at the Lecture Hall at the Harford Church. The meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is January 5, 2015, and discussion will center on entertainment at the fair both in the main arena and the shade pavilion. Other plans for the 158th fair, which will be held August 17-22, 2015, will be part of the meeting.

Plan to attend the meeting if you have any interest in the Harford Fair and bring your suggestions. The Harford Agricultural Society welcomes the involvement of the community.

Farm Bill Program To Focus On Crops

Penn State Extension and the USDA Farm Service Agency are teaming up to offer an Information Session on Tuesday, January 6th from 1-3 pm at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 276 Church Street, Montrose.  Registration is free, all are encouraged to just show up and participate. The Information Session will cover the 2014 Farm Bill Crops Programs.  All farmers are invited to learn more about the features of these new programs, decisions you need to make, and what these decisions could mean for your farm.

Items on the agenda include base acre reallocation, program crops yield updating, key components of PLC, ARC-CO, ARC-IC, and SCO and to how to compare these programs. The instructor will also explore a sample farm scenario, accessing and using the online decision tools and the process for sign up.

For more information on these programs, visit the Penn State Extension Farm Bill Resources website at extension.psu.edu or the USDA FSA website. For additional information contact your local Penn State Extension Office at 570-278-1158 or the Susquehanna County FSA Office at 570-278-1011.
