Foster Grandparent Program Recruiting

Foster Grandparents are simply seniors who have a lot to give and are determined to make a difference in their community. They share love, time and experience; they have the power to help a child who needs them. As a Foster Grandparent, you’re a role model, a mentor, and a friend. Foster Grandparents serve at local organizations, including faith-based groups, Head Start Centers, schools, and other youth facilities by helping children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, Foster Grandparents give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future.

Foster Grandparents are individuals age 55 and over who thrive on direct interaction with children and believe they can make a difference in their lives.  Income-eligible Foster Grandparents receive a modest stipend to help offset the costs of volunteering.

For more information on the Foster Grandparent Program and other Area Agency on Aging services please call 1-800-982-4346. The B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging; the United Way of Bradford County; and the Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Tioga County Commissioners.

The Foster Grandparent Program is funded by the Corporation of National Community Service and the Bradford County United Way; and is sponsored by the B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc.

Region Pioneers

“Treasure the Memories” is the state theme for the agricultural fairs across Pennsylvania.  Anyone who visits the 157th Harford Fair, August 18-23, 2014, will see evidence of this theme throughout displays at the fair.  One of the unique features of the fair is the Founders Museum which houses antique tools, wagons, equipment, kitchen utensils, and a variety of other interesting artifacts.  Many of the items are donated and are a part of the permanent collection.  Additional items are on loan each year for the fair.

New in the museum this year is a display of over fifty photographs which depict the hard work done by local people who settled the region and the labor intensive tools they used to accomplish that end.  Scenes from the area which includes Susquehanna, Great Bend, Hallstead, New Milford, Hop Bottom, Montrose, and Dimock, depict the people and the industries of a hundred years ago.

Pictured is a collection of over fifty 8X10 photos, which depict the people and various industries in Susquehanna County from over 100 years ago, creating a display in the Founders Museum at the Harford Fair.

When you view the display, you will see examples of the local community dairies in Susquehanna County, the Kid Wagon which transported kids to school, the Rural Delivery sleighs and carriers, the Butcher Wagon, and the General Stores.  The collection compiled by Lynn and Ron Stiles will become a permanent part of the Founders Museum.  They are constantly in search for more local photos of that time period and welcome any contributions others would like to make.

Many of the pieces in Founders Museum at the Harford Fair have stories behind them.  If you have something that you would like to donate or display on loan for next year’s fair contact Ron Stiles at 465-3207.  Plans are already underway for the 158th Harford Fair which will be celebrated August 17-22, 2015.
