North Jackson Ag 4-H Club Meet

On April 26th 2014 at the Pavelski’s farm the North Jackson Ag. 4-H club gathered for a meeting. At 7:00 pm the meeting was called to order by Emily Supancik, the club president. The pledge to the American flag was led by Garrett Conklin. Eli Aldridge led the 4-H pledge. Emory Bewley, our club’s 2013 secretary, gave the secretary’s report next. Then Jamie Supancik, our 2013 treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report.

Our next order of business was to elect our club officers for 2014. They are as follows: President - Emily Supancik; Vice president - Emory Bewley; Treasurer - Samantha Jones; Secretary - Jamie Supancik; News reporter - KayLeen Conklin; Historians - Katelyn Supancik, Garrett Conklin, and Holly Galvin.

The registration for camp Brule is online this year. Camp Brule will be held from June 18th to the 22nd. May 17th is shooting sports fun day. Cow camp will be on May 16th and 17th. June 7th is the Livestock Clinic held at the Harford Fairgrounds. June 26th is the fashion review.

During our meeting two clubbers gave their demonstrations. Emory Bewley gave hers on the importance of drinking chocolate milk and Ryan Supancik gave his on baseball.

Our next meeting will be a pizza party on May 24th, 2:00 PM at the Valley Lanes Bowling Alley.

Local Youth Earn Bishop’s Award

Religious education students Callie Curley and Serena Gardner from Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Montrose, were awarded the Bishop’s Youth Award April 24 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton, PA. 

The young women and their families attended a special evening Mass celebrated by Diocese of Scranton Bishop Joseph C. Bambera. The cathedral held a standing-room-only crowd for the awards ceremony.

To be nominated for this award, the recipients from throughout the Diocese had to demonstrate a dedication to their Catholic faith by self-motivated service in various church areas and in the community at large.

Fran Calafut, Director of Religious Education, proudly said, “We wish to congratulate Callie and Serena for being recognized by the Diocese of Scranton.” 

Calafut continued, “I speak for our church community when offering thanks to them for their diligent participation in and service to HNM Church. They are shining examples of Catholic faith.”

Callie is a senior at Montrose Area High School and the daughter of Ben and Amy Curley.

Serena is the daughter of Brinton and Anne Gardner and a MAHS 8th grade student.

103 Years Young!

On April 28th, Forest City Personal Care, along with family and friends, marked the 103rd birthday of Jane Carpenter with a party in her honor.


Jane Carpenter

Benji Jane Archer was born April 28, 1911 to Ann and William Archer, from Archer Hill, Fiddle Lake, Pa. She had 2 siblings, a brother, Theodore and a sister, Mildred. She and her siblings were home schooled by their father. Once Jane reached the third grade level, she was sent to a 1 room school house and attended there until the eighth grade. At age 17, Jane left home and got her first job caring for children. At 18, she began her career as a sewing machine operator and worked 26 years for Katz Factory in Honesdale.

In 1944, she met and married her husband Emerson Carpenter, and moved to the Waymart area. Jane had no children of her own, but became Step-mom to Emersons’s five children. Jane became an active member of the Waymart First Baptist Church. She served on many committees including Missions and also taught Sunday school.

At age 95, Jane was no longer able to live alone and became a resident at Sponji Manor, Waymart until it closed in 2012. She now makes her home at the Forest City Personal Care where she has made many new friends.
