Discover 4-H: Leisure & Cultural Education Projects

Our next Susquehanna County 4-H feature is about our leisure projects, sewing projects, and communications projects. I’m sure you’re wondering what that means and involves. Let me tell you a little bit about these very popular projects.

The leisure project area involves projects such as orienteering, cake decorating, bowling, gravestone rubbings, swimming, crafts, ceramics, scrapbooking, golf, and hiking. As you can see that is a wide range of projects, but there is one for everybody. These projects are fun, interactive, and are activities you do all summer long. Additionally, there are projects focused on health and safety that include first aid and bicycling. Most of these projects require completing a project book and exhibiting a poster, display, or item that you made in the 4-H Building at the Harford Fair. It is always fun to see how creative our Susquehanna County 4-Hers can be with their projects.

Another popular project area that people associate with 4-H is sewing and cooking. 4-H offers many different projects that involve making your very own outfit. Members that enroll in sewing project are able to make an outfit with the help of their parents, grandparents, and leaders, and model it at the Regional Fashion Revue. The Regional Fashion Revue happens every year, and allows 4-Hers the chance to learn more about sewing and be judged on their outfits. The Regional 4-H Fashion Revue is scheduled for June 26th at the Mehoopany Baptist Church. However, to be part of 4-H sewing, you do not have to create an outfit. There are projects available where you can make a pillow, a quilt, a crocheted or knitted item, and even projects that focus on wardrobe planning and clothes shopping. Furthermore, there are many projects that teach youth about cooking. There’s Canning with Tomatoes and Fruit, Yeast Breads on the Rise, and Breads from Around the World, just to name a few.

Another important aspect of the 4-H program is promoting and encouraging youth in communications and public speaking. 4-H offers projects specifically tailored to encourage public speaking and other methods of communication. There is a photography project, theater arts, and the 4-H Public Speaking project. Members create presentations and photo albums, and exhibit them at the Harford Fair.

If Susquehanna County 4-H sounds like a program your kids might be interested in, please contact the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office today. Our phone number is (570) 278-1158 or drop an e-mail to ano3@psu.edu. Also be sure to check out our website at extension.psu.edu/Susquehanna and find us on Facebook at Susquehanna County 4-H. I look forward to helping you join 4-H, and be sure to look for our next series article on what Officer positions and projects for youth ages 5-8 Susquehanna County 4-H offers.
