Elk Lake Elementary Students Of Month

Dr. Kenneth Cuomo, Elementary Principal at the Elk Lake School, is pleased to announce the December, 2013 Student of the Month Award winners.

Students in kindergarten, first, and second were selected by their homeroom teachers.  Students may be selected as student of the month from four different areas.  Those four areas are academic achievement, attendance, citizenship and most improved.

Elk Lake Forensics Has Strong Finish

Elk Lake’s young debaters continued their successful season on January 18 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tournament at Meyers HS in Wilkes-Barre.

Three Elk Lake Forensics Team members brought home trophies at this large invitational tournament.

Leading the way for the team was junior Keeley Carney in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate.  Carney compiled a preliminary record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

As a result of her record, she advanced to Finals where she lost to tournament champion Barron Williams from Danville and placed second overall.

Junior Haley Skinner compiled a 2 win and 2 loss record during the preliminary rounds and placed fifth overall in Varsity LD Debate.

Sophomore Kenneth Brittingham built on his success last weekend by placing 6th in Varsity Student Congress.  Brittingham also served as Presiding Officer for the second consecutive week.

 “This was another great tournament for this team.  They are really gaining skills and developing into solid debaters,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

The Elk Lake Forensics Team traveled to Abington Heights on January 25 to compete at a Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament.

Montrose FBLA Hosts Region Conference

Friday, January 10, 2014 may have brought snow and weather-related delays to many schools in northeastern PA, but it also saw the Montrose Area High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America host the PA FBLA Region 27 Leadership Conference. 

It was a busy day, but even with a schedule being delayed by 2 hours, by late morning 11 schools arrived with approximately 400 students prepared to compete in over 50 different business, technology, and career related events.

In addition to competing in the events:

The MASD Administration served lunch.

MASD FBLA Alumni Stacie Rihl, David Koloski, and Sean Regan ran an all-new region wide trivia contest.

Students met with banking professionals from Pennstar Bank & PA Dept. of Banking & Securities.

Men's Wearhouse gave away a tux and made sure that at least 60 kids knew how to Dress for Success.

Jill Krystin, from Defining Manners in Shavertown, PA, made sure their etiquette was set for home and work.

The Blue Ridge FBLA and their school newspaper made articles as an interactive workshop.

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week told kids about the opportunities afforded to them via summer programs.

At the end of the conference Montrose FBLA was pleased to learn that 26 of 31 members had finished 5th or better in their events, with 11 advancing to the State Leadership Conference April 7-9, 2014 in Hershey, PA.

Todd Lattimore, Business Calculations – 2nd Place. Annelise Mittmann, Introduction to Business – 2nd Place. Taylor Warner, Health Care Administration – 2nd Place.  Chris Lewis, Introduction to Information Technology – 3rd Place. Angela Russell, Agribusiness – 3rd Place.

Other Top 5 finishers included these teams: Team of Laura Brink, Meghan Spellman Hospitality, Morgan Updyke,Hospitality Management – 2nd Place. Team of Amber Lindsey and Mariah Tompkins,Global Business – 2nd Place. Erica Reeves, Public Speaking II – 2nd Place. Mindy Carlton, FBLA Principles and Procedures – 4th place. Jessica Sivers, Accounting I – 4th place. Zeb Swartley, Business Math – 4th place. Brendan Buck, Introduction to Information Technology – 5th place. Theresa McNamara, Word Processing – 5th place. Joseph Rodino, Economics – 5th place. Team of Justin Hartman, Matt Lewis, & Andreas Mittmann, Entrepreneurship – 5th place.

Middle Level (7th & 8th Grade) winners included the following: Allison Bickford, ML - Business Computations – 1st place. Jenna Johnson, ML - Business Spelling – 1st place. Maverick Beeman, ML - Employability Skills – 1st place. Celia Kane, ML - Business Computations – 2nd place. Cinnamon Benedict, ML - Business Spelling – 2nd place. Samantha Gurn, ML - Career Exploration – 2nd place. Romey Washo, ML - Business Spelling – 4th place. Makenzie Garner, ML - Career Exploration – 5th place. Ethan Legg, ML - Business Spelling – 5th place.

Madison Button Makes E. C. Dean's List

Elizabethtown (Pa.) College announced the names of students whose outstanding academic performances have earned them the recognition of being included on the fall 2013 dean's list.

Madison Button, a Music Therapy major from Hallstead has made the Fall Dean’s List.

Ashlynn Cobb Makes JC Dean's List

Juniata College has named 371 students to the dean's list for the 2013 fall semester. Each student must have at least a 3.6 grade average out of a possible 4.0.

Ashlynn Nicole Cobb of Montrose, daughter of Brian and Kristine Cobb and a 2013 graduate of Montrose Area Senior High School was named to the 2013 fall dean's list.

Wilkes University Interim Provost Terese Wignot announced the Dean's List for the Fall 2013 Semester. To be named to the Dean's List, students must obtain a minimum 3.4 grade point average and carry at least 12 credits.

More than 1,600 students have been named to the Fall, 2013 Dean's List at Kutztown University. To be eligible for Dean's List, an undergraduate student must be registered for at least 12 credits and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60.

Katherine Mitchell On BWU Dean’s List

Katherine Mitchell of Springville has been named to the Dean's List for the Fall Semester 2013 at Baldwin Wallace University, according to Stephen D. Stahl, Provost. Students who receive at least a 3.6 GPA for seven or more graded hours in a single semester are named to the Dean's List.

Locals Named To U.S. Dean’s List

The University of Scranton has announced it's Dean's List, which recognizes students for academic excellence during the 2013 fall semester. A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours to make the Dean's List. The list includes students from the Jesuit university's College of Arts and Sciences, the Kania School of Management, the Panuska College of Professional Studies and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education. More than 1,380 students were named to the 2013 fall semester Dean's List, including the following area residents:

Mary Brennan of Browndale, is a freshman with a biology major in Scranton's College of Arts and Sciences.

Kelsey Carmody of Thompson, is a senior with a health administration major in Scranton's Panuska College of Professional Studies.

Madison Gumpper of Union Dale, is a senior with a nursing major in Scranton's Panuska College of Professional Studies.

Dominick Sparks of Forest City, is a junior with a computer engineering major in Scranton's College of Arts and Sciences.

Gregory Stonier of New Milford, is a junior with a biology major in Scranton's College of Arts and Sciences.

Elizabeth Walko of Clifford Township, is a junior with a early and primary teacher education major in Scranton's Panuska College of Professional Studies.
