Conservation District Seedling Sale
Submitted by Robert Fearnley
The Susquehanna County Conservation District is pleased to offer a wide variety of evergreens, hardwoods, fruit trees, berry plants and flowers in their annual seedling sale. The sale will be held April 12, 2014 between 9:00 and 11:00 am at the Susquehanna County Recycling Center. The plants need to be preordered and prepaid by March 14th.
Evergreen species available include red and white pine, Norway spruce, concolor and Douglas fir and blue spruce. These conifers can be used for Christmas trees, landscaping, windbreaks and wildlife habitat. Hardwood seedlings include Chinese chestnut, sawtooth oak, black cherry, winterberry, American highbush cranberry and hazelnut. These provide food and cover for many species of birds and mammals. The nuts and berries of chestnut, hazelnut, black cherry and cranberry can be used by humans for tasty treats.
Fruit tree varieties include four apples and a peach and a pie cherry. The apples include Querina and Liberty; both varieties are scab resistant, an important trait for growers interested in reducing the use of sprays. Northern spy and Perrine yellow transparent are the two old fashion varieties selected for this year. Northern spy is a very popular apple in the northeast for all apple uses. Perrine yellow transparent apples are an early season favorite for delicious smooth apple sauce. Jubileum pie cherry is a very early, sweet pie cherry that will make great pies or fresh eating. An early season white peach, July Rose offers a special sweet taste treat.
Blueberries are always a popular addition to the garden and this year the District has two ways they may be purchased. Blue Crop, Duke and Darrow are available in one gallon containers; while Sparten, Brigetta and Blue Jay can be bought in five gallon containers. The five gallon containers give an opportunity for instant gratification as these three foot high plants will produce a crop this summer. Earlyglow strawberries have long been the standard for sweet flavor in an early season berry. A popular summer bearing raspberry is Lauren. It produces a large full flavor berry on disease resistant canes.
Flowering shrubs include azaleas and mountain laurel, which are available in two colors each. Four species of wildflower plugs are not only pollinator friendly but also deer resistant. If you wish more information on all the varieties for sale, the descriptions are on the District’s website: www. suscondistrict.org. Order forms may be found on the website or picked up in the District office at 88 Chenango Street, Montrose, PA 18801 or phone 570-278-4600-ext 280. Profits from the seedling sale support the District’s youth education efforts.

Pickett Invites Residents Visits
Susquehanna County residents who have questions about any state legislation or government program offered by the Commonwealth can stop by Rep. Tina Pickett’s (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) satellite office hours during the month of February.
“This time of year, my full-time offices in Towanda and Sayre get a lot of questions about the state LIHEAP program for home energy assistance and applications for financial help for higher education, and people in Susquehanna County may also have these same questions,” Pickett said. “That is why I encourage them to call or stop by my satellite office hours in Lawton this month.”
Hours for her Susquehanna County satellite office will continue to be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays – Feb. 12 and Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Flynn’s Consignment Shop, which is located along State Route 706, in Lawton. Residents can reach the office by calling (570) 934-2557.
