A Is For AppleFest

It is time once again for Susquehanna County Literacy Program’s largest fundraiser, Applefest. The event will fill the green in Montrose Saturday, September 14 from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.

While apples will be featured with some of the produce vendors, the apple in Applefest refers to the symbol of literacy. For years, people have turned to the organization with the big red apple to improve their lives. Through the Literacy Program, adults have obtained their high school equivalency diploma know as the GED, others have enjoyed special one-on-one tutoring enhancing basic skills and families have grown through literacy based classes and events. The money raised through Applefest helps the non-profit group continue to provide these services.

This year’s festival promises to be one of the best. Dog lovers are encouraged to enter their pooches in the first ever “Applefest Dog Show.” Categories include: cutest dog; scruffiest dog; best dog trick; best dressed dog; and best dog displaying the apple logo. There is no cost to enter, although donations are welcome. Dog owners can call (607) 765-7116 to register.

Kids are encouraged to jazz up their bikes for the 2nd Annual Bike Decorating Contest. They can also enjoy a bouncy house, special games and the Ross Park Zoo Mobile. Everyone can check out the basket raffle, crafters, special food items and information booths.

If you would like more information about the upcoming Applefest or about how you can help the program meet its mission of providing life skills, education and promoting life- long learning, call (570) 465-2880, see our webpage at www.scliteracy.org or check us out on facebook.

Who Is Caring For Caregivers?

Are you helping a friend, neighbor, someone with a disability with their shopping, doctor appointments, housework? Are you helping your elderly parents by frequently going to their home to provide assistance? Have you had your aging parent move in with you because they couldn’t live alone any longer? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are a caregiver. The need for this type of caregiving is on the rise while those providing the care for family and friends are getting stressed out. Being a caregiver often has many challenges and also rewards. Caregivers develop special relationships with those they assist. There can be a deepening of the family relationships; times of reminiscing, open discussions of old unresolved issues.

There are also additional stressors. Being a caregiver can create financial strain by additional car trips to appointments, additional costs if you have someone move in with you. There are demands on your limited time. In order to address the stressors and maximize the positives, the B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. and Meadow View Senior Living Center are piloting a caregivers’ group. Each month will offer education and resources from financial and caregiver relief programs including: consideration of insurance choices, training on how to properly give care, bed baths, and transferring in and out of bed. The group will meet on the third Wednesday of each month from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, beginning September 11, 2013, at Meadow View Senior Living Center in Montrose.

For more information or to register call the Area Agency on Aging at 570-278-3751 or 1-800-634-3746.
