Friends Of Susq. Co. To Hold Festival

Friends of Susquehanna County, Inc. will hold their annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 14, 2013 on the grounds of the Colonial Brick Inn & Suites, Hallstead, PA (Route 11, Exit 230 on Interstate 81) from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The big tents will show the way.
Looking for vintage or unique items? You might find them at our Rummage Tables or with our vendors. Looking for something good to eat? Baked goods, specialty fun food, Farmers’ Market with fruits and vegetables, and homemade jams will be available.
Mama Bullmoose (DJ-Nancy Dennis) will be on hand for some rocking good music.
A raffle is available for 20 Gift Baskets filled with treasures, certificate.
Proceeds will enable Friends of Susquehanna County Inc. to support charitable and educational projects in Susquehanna County. Together we can make a difference in the lives of those who call Susquehanna County home.

Penn State Extension Offers Food For Profit Class

Have you ever been told that your favorite homemade bread, or salsa, is “good enough to sell?” Do you have additional fruit or vegetables from your farm or home garden that you would like to make into a commercial product? Penn State Extension’s Food for Profit, is a one-day workshop to help you work through the maze of local and state regulations, food safety issues, and business management concepts that all must be considered in setting up a commercial food business. The course will be held at the White Oak Restaurant, Montrose on Tuesday, October 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
How Can Food for Profit Help Me?: Food for Profit will take you step-by-step through the entrepreneurial process. It will provide you with the information and skills to assess if your idea will be something that will sell at a profit. Conducting a feasibility study (to see if yours is a good business idea), performing marketing research, and beginning to draft a business plan are a few of the concrete tools taught by certified instructors and business experts. By attending this class, you can learn how to evaluate the opportunities on paper before you look for funding or take action (saving money and time).
Who Should Attend the Course?: If you want to develop the skills to be innovative and visionary in your business – to grow your food venture - you will enjoy and benefit from this course. If you’re searching for innovative ideas about how to get your enterprise off the ground, this program is for you!
Registration Information: Food for Profit will meet from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm., on Tuesday, October 1st at the White Oak Restaurant, 416 South Main Street, Montrose. Steps For Older Adults Fall Prevention Tips

Most People know that having a fall injury such a as a hip fracture can be devastating, to both the person and to his or her family. But many people do not know that there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of falling. Healthy Steps for Older Adults is a program to help people prevent falls and improve their health.
Healthy Steps for Older Adults will be held at the Emerson Apartments, on Thursday, September 12th, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Emerson Apartments is located at Lackawanna Street, Hallstead. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required.

Susquehanna QDMA Announces Bus Trip

On September 14th a fun and educational trip is planned to help launch the formation of the Quality Deer Management Associations (QDMA) local Rack Pack youth group. The bus trip to Cabela’s, in Hamburg, Pa., is open to all youth ages 17 and under. Fun and educational activities on the way to Cabela’s will include short movies about wildlife and trivia contests about the outdoors. At Cabela’s the youth participants will take part in a scavenger hunt and be attending one of two possible seminars – either Firearms Safety (10 Rules of safe gun handling) or Firearms Responsibility. There will also be time for shopping.
There is a cost for the trip, which includes full Rack Pack membership (which includes personalized member card, certificate decals, Rack Pack poster), T-shirt and a bagged lunch. The coach bus will leave the Montrose Price Chopper parking lot at 8am and return at 5:30 pm. The first 10 adults (parents/family adult) who are willing to sign up as chaperones will not be charged the bus trip fee.
According to Branch Secretary Bob Wagner, "This educational effort (bus trip) is part of the Susquehanna Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association's 12+ years of commitment to educational outreach to youth and those who want to know more about the whitetail deer."

Wild About Flowers

Come join The Garden Club of Montrose in a photographic journey through Susquehanna County in search of the area’s wildflowers. Naturalist Nancy Wottrich will teach us the difference between the “beauties” and the invasive “beasties”. Nancy has extensive background knowledge and experience in the world of nature, including birds, trees and flowers. She will help open our eyes to the wondrous world around us.
Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. is the date and time. The Community Room at Montrose Square on Church Street is the place. Bring a friend and be prepared to look and learn. You may see things you’ve never seen before. Light refreshments will be served. Questions? Call 278-2887.

Yoga For Seniors

Want to feel refreshed? Age 60 or older? Come join the fun on Fridays at 10:00 AM from September 13th to October 18th, at the Blue Ridge Senior Center. The classes are being offered at no cost through the Area Agency on Aging’s Prime Time Health program. Register for the classes by calling the Senior Center at 570-879-2896. The benefits of yoga are numerous and include increased strength, flexibility and balance. Almost everybody system is refreshed through this gentle form of combined breathing and movement. All classes include centering, gentle warm-ups that can be modified to any level of physical activity, postures, and a closing relaxation. Prime Time Health is a wellness and prevention program for older adults. The goal of Prime Time Health is to provide information and encouragement to help older adults make choices to maintain or improve their health and create an ongoing wellness attitude.
