Local Schools Help Animal Shelter

This past month area school districts came together in a program to raise much needed funding for True Friends Animal Welfare Center in Montrose. The “Hat for a Day” program allowed students to wear a hat to school when donating $1 to our local shelter. Through this fundraiser, students from Elk Lake, Mt. View, Montrose, Susquehanna, and Tunkhannock collectively raised an impressive $1,000.00 to help their animal friends.

True Friends, our only local no-kill shelter, is a community organization that greatly depends on fundraising and donations to keep the shelter open. Presently they are in need of additional financial support to renovate their back building that solely houses over 25 of our area’s homeless animals at one time. The building requires critical repairs including ongoing flooding issues that were recently resolved, but resulted in a significant financial strain to the shelter.

As an organization that depends on every dollar just to operate, raising the extra funds for the back building is a challenge, but an important one for the safety and welfare of the animals. True Friends relies upon this building to take in over 1,000 homeless dogs each year and without the additional kennels they would not be able to help nearly as many as they do now.

“ We are very proud to be part of a community that comes together when needed. True Friends is grateful to all the schools that went above and beyond to help us,” stated Director, Dory Browning.

On August 10th True Friends will be celebrating it’s 2nd Year Anniversary with their momentous “Woofstock” event. They are looking forward to another year of improving the shelter for the animals in need and the ones to come. A significant goal for the True Friend’s team is to improve the building and they greatly appreciate community support to fulfill this monumental task.

“I am incredibly proud of our team of volunteers, staff, and advocates for in such a short time, making our organization what it is today. We are however, looking forward to much needed improvements for our animals,” commented Browning.

If you would like to make a donation specifically for the restorations, donations can be sent to: True Friends, Back Building Fund, 16332 SR 706, Montrose, PA 18801.
