Awesome Archers 4-H Club News

After many weeks of rain, the Awesome Archers 4-H Club was finally able to have another meeting on Thursday, June 20th. 19 members attended. Several members attended Camp Brule on June 22. Helpful ideas were shared on how and what to pack for camp. This was the last meeting to bring collections for the can and bottle drive to raise money for club t-shirts. The club decided to have t-shirts made in a teal color.

Megan McVaugh shared information with the club about collections for the Food Bank in Montrose. She said there is a huge need for all food and nonfood items. Club members plan to bring donations to their July 11th meeting so a collection can be made for the Food Bank. There is also an opportunity for members to volunteer at the Food Bank by helping with a community garden. After finishing business the members took turns shooting.

Awesome Archers At Relay for Life

On Friday, June 21st several members of the Awesome Archers 4-H Club volunteered to help set up for the Relay for Life Event held at the Montrose High School. Bridget Bendock, Mario Mollo, Maverick Naylor, Rileigh Naylor, Heile Pearson, Rilee Pearson, and Connor Roberts helped put together and set up signs around the high school track. They also helped set up tables for the cancer survivor’s dinner. Another way members helped was to blow up and tie balloons to decorate around the track. They passed out event schedules to participating campsites.

One last job was to put together Luminaria in remembrance of loved ones lost to cancer or to honor those who are cancer survivors. Club members were glad to help with such an important cause. It is a good feeling to know that you are doing something to help others who have been through so much.

Burrowing Into A Book This Summer

All libraries in Susquehanna County will be participating in a summer reading program. This year’s theme, “Dig Into Reading,” is all about the wonders under our feet - root vegetables, buried treasure, dinosaur bones, evidence of ancient civilizations and, of course, the critters.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every child participated in summer reading, and as a result, we raised literacy rates throughout the area? When children read only 16.9 minutes a day, they are exposed to 1,168,000 words a year and test in the 70th percentile. If we dig into reading just a little deeper and average 33.4 minutes a day, they devour a staggering 2,357,000 words a year. Together with the family, libraries can build a stronger future for our children by opening a book for minutes a day.

Nurturing a more literate society is one of five literacies in PA Forward, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association. When leveraged properly, our libraries can help solve some of Pennsylvania’s biggest economic and social problems. More than 75% of jobs in Pennsylvania demand education beyond high school. And yet, nearly 120,000 Pennsylvania youths have dropped out of high school. For more information on how PA Forward impacts Pennsylvania visit www.paforward.org.

Reading is the root of every child’s success. We hope you dig into our summer reading fun. Visit www.susqcolibrary.org or call 570-278-1881 for a complete list of activities and events. Online registration is open now. Help us plant the seeds to learning with our summer reading program.

PASR Gives Grant

Mrs. Jami Hyndshaw, a sixth grade teacher at Susquehanna Community, offered a challenge to her sixth grade reading students this year. The district implemented a reading requirement for sixth graders of reading 15 minutes per night of non curriculum related material which had to be kept track of in a daily reading log. Students who completed the reading logs had an opportunity for an extrinsic prize for each quarter. Finally, any student who had turned in logs totaling 2,000 minutes of reading or more throughout the year was included in a drawing for either a Kindle Fire or a Nook Color E-Reader. Mrs. Hyndshaw received a grant from the Susquehanna Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) to fund the final prize.

Pictured are the Sixth graders from Mrs. Hyndshaw's class who met the goal of reading 2,000 minutes.

The long awaited moment finally arrived and the excited students assembled to find who would receive the coveted prize. Mrs. Hyndshaw explained that she had 34 reading students of which 6 had completed the goal of 2,000 minutes. There were other students who had been very close to the goal. The eager readers were Lia Heath, Adam Rockwell, Michael Braun, Rhiannon Potter, Robert Burns, and CJ Stone. The lucky reader whose name was drawn from the hat was Robert Burns. He reported that he really enjoyed reading bird books and there was a large one on his desk at that moment. Another student reported that he enjoyed “The Hunger Games.”

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) congratulates all the sixth graders for attempting to do the required reading plus parents and teachers for encouraging them.
