The Kiwanis-Lions-Rotary (KLR) service clubs of Montrose are pleased to announce that they have chosen the theme “A Good Neighbor 4thth” for this year’s Independence Day Celebration to be held in Montrose on Thursday, July 4, 2013.

The theme for this year’s festivities was chosen in recognition of the primary mission of all community service organizations – “Helping Our Neighbors”, especially those who need assistance in their day-to-day living.

The KLR is pleased to honor a very special group of individuals who certainly exemplify this year’s theme. The Grand Marshal for the 2013 celebration is Susquehanna County Interfaith.

Under the leadership of Director, Rachel Pratt, Interfaith truly exemplifies this year’s theme through the many programs they undertake to help our neighbors in need. Those programs include: a Back to School Shoe Program that supplies shoes, book bags and school supplies, the Christmas Bureau that provides toys and food for over 600 needy families, a Fuel Program, assisting with the payment of home heating bills, and an Emergency Assistance Program that provides aide to neighbors with emergencies such as rent, medical or utility needs.

Interfaith also has a thrift store located on Public Avenue in Montrose. The store provides a wide variety of affordable clothing for the general public. The proceeds from the store are used to help defray the costs of all their programs.

The KLR is also pleased to recognize three special groups of young adults who stood out in the fields of academics and sports for their respective schools as this year’s Honorary Grand Marshals.

The Mountain View High School boys’ soccer team, coached by Roger Thomas, won the PIAA Class A Soccer championship as they finished the year undefeated.

The Montrose Scholastic Bowl Academic team, under the direction of advisor, John Koloski, finished in first place in all area scholastic bowl challenges, and just recently finished in the top 10 for teams throughout the United States in a competition held in, Washington D.C.

For the second time in three years, the Elk Lake High School Girls Cross Country team, under the leadership of coach, Will Squier, won the PIAA Class A Girls Cross Country championship.

This year will mark the second crowning of the “Miss Independence Day Queen”. The young woman chosen for this honor will be selected by a committee of judges from the KLR and will participate in the Patriotic Parade on July 4th and will also receive a scholarship for use to further her education at the college level.

The July 4th festivities in Montrose provide a number of daylong activities to celebrate our Nation’s freedom and independence. The Endless Mountains Independence Day races will begin with runners registering, 6:30 –7:30 a.m., at the courthouse. A one-mile Fun Run (no registration required), will start at 7:45a.m., followed by the 5K starting at 8:00 a.m. and the 10K race starting at 8:10 a.m. The first 350 5K and 10K registrants will get a commemorative gift. In addition, awards will be presented to many age groups for both men and women. Again this year, timing and results will be handled by the Triple Cities Runners Club. Racers may pre-register on-line and check race results at allsportscentral.com, said Fred Malloy, race director.

Over 130 top quality arts and craft exhibitors will be set up on the Village Green starting at 8:00 a.m. In addition many food and soda booths will provide a vast variety of ’goodies’ to satisfy any palate. A chicken bar-b-que dinner will also be available, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The highlight of the day will be the Patriotic Parade, which steps off at 11:00 a.m. As in years past, the theme will be used as a guide to decorate the floats that will participate in the Parade. The floats that best depict this year’s theme, “A Good Neighbor 4th ”, will be awarded cash prizes as follows: 1st - $200, 2nd - $150, 3rd - $100, 4th thru 6th - $50 each.

In addition, the Kiwanis Club of Montrose will present the Ted Brzuska Memorial Award for the float that best depicts ‘service to children’. The prize is $100. Floats will be judged during the parade for how they best present the theme for this year. The basic principle for the theme is the time honored adage of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”! Focus areas can include how different organizations, groups, clubs, churches, companies or other entities use their talents, time and treasures to benefit their communities and the people who live and/or visit their community. Additional ideas for your float can include how your organization provides specific services that enhance the social, fraternal, spiritual, safety, educational, governmental, etc., well-being of those people in your community. All of these actions and services truly define you as being ‘A Good Neighbor”.

A vast array of floats, bands, marching units and antique and classic vehicles will be in the parade which will travel from the east end of Grow Avenue near Lake Montrose to Church Street and up Public Avenue to the village green.

Public safety officials said temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted on streets designated for emergency vehicle access. Violators risk fines and towing costs. There are many off-street parking lots identified for guest parking, as well as lawn and driveway spaces provided by Montrose residents.

The day will conclude with a gigantic display of fireworks. The Montrose Area Chamber of Commerce will present this annual July 4th tradition on the grounds of the Montrose Area High School beginning at dusk.
