Blue Ridge Students Giving Donations
Submitted by Sarah M. Templeton
Students from Blue Ridge's Fifth Grade Art club raised $219.41 this school year to donate to Susquehanna County Interfaith. The money will help people who need help heating their homes during the cold winter months. This is the third year that BR students in Sarah Dibble's after-school art club have completed this project. BR students have raised over $1500 to help people over the last three winters.

Pictured (l-r) are Gabe Waldowski, Nathan Yager, Raymond Lindquist, Eli Aldrich, Makenzie Cook, Josiah Smalley, Tori Auckland, Gia Fiore, and Morgan Mansfield.
This project is part of the Hexagon Project. Students created donation containers and placed them in local business where donations were collected. Students used their art as a tool to help others and become interdependent with the community. The containers will be a part of the Interdependence Day art exhibit in the fall of 2013. For more information on the Hexagon Project and Interdependence Day please visit www.interdependencedaynepa.org.

PA One Book Author Visits Blue Ridge
Submitted by Sarah Templeton
On Wednesday, April 10th, Blue Ridge Elementary had the pleasure of meeting Suzanne Bloom, talented author and illustrator. Her beautiful picture book, The Bus for Us, is Pennsylvania's One Book, Every Young Child 2013 selection. Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child is a reading initiative that stresses the importance of reading early and often to our children as well as engaging them in conversation and activities around good literature. This is not the first time a book of Bloom’s was chosen as the PA One Book. In 2007, A Splendid Friend, Indeed had been selected, and she was able to visit Blue Ridge at that time as well.

Author/Illustrator, Suzanne Bloom, sharing A Bus For Us
Mrs. Bloom visited our primary students in the morning and encouraged them to follow their dreams. Students were thrilled to hear Mrs. Bloom had a dream of becoming an author and artist at a young age, and they were able to discuss some of their own goals with her personally. Mrs. Bloom led a shared reading of A Bus for Us, and when students saw her beautiful illustrations, their eyes lit up with excitement. Thanks to Blue Ridge’s generous PTO, all Pre-K students received a copy of this year’s PA One Book, A Bus for Us. We would also like to thank the Commonwealth Library System of Pennsylvania for organizing this educational and beneficial author presentation.
