Blue Ridge Donates Goods
Submitted by Sarah M. Templeton

Blue Ridge Elementary Kindergarten Students
Each year Pennsylvania commemorates Local Government Week, which focuses attention on the need for strong, independant, and active local governments. Pennsylvania recognizes the valuable contributions their elected officials make in our communities.
The New Milford Township likes to bring awarness and celebration of community to the Blue Ridge Elementary students through it’s annual Local Government Week contest. This year the students were challenged to support our Service Men and Women by donating Dept. of Defense approved goods to be shipped overseas to those currently serving our country. Items were collected March 18th - March 22.
The Kindergarten students collected the most items. They were awarded for their participation with patriotic goodies, as well as a movie ticket to a show of their choice at the Montrose Theater.
The theater helped co-sponsor the event by donating a portion of the tickets.

BR Elem. Celebrates Read Across America
Submitted by Sarah Templeton
Blue Ridge Elementary celebrated Read Across America on Friday, March 1st, with an afternoon assembly. This event is sponsored by the National Education Association and always takes place on or near March 2nd, which is the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This year’s book was Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s, a book about two dogs, Ichabod and Izzy, who journey through the alphabet and meet characters that begin with each letter. At the assembly, the students enjoyed the book read in a variety of ways. First for enjoyment, then acted out by some of our elementary students and teachers, and finally a Readers’ Theater activity where different grade levels read certain pages. Facts about the famous Dr.Seuss, or Theodor Geisel were shared as well as a mini lesson on the figurative language device of alliteration.

Pictured are Elementary Students who performed parts in the book Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s (l-r): front row - Ryan Scott, Clayton Whitney, Garrett Conklin, KayLeen Conklin, Alanna Thornton, Olivia Martin, Carli Thornton; back row - Morgan Mansfield, Ryan Mills, Tori Auckland, Andrew Scott, Madison Swisher, Sarah Marble, Jacob Morris.

To highlight the importance of reading, students joined librarian, Mrs. Tench, in reciting “The Readers’ Oath”. The day was made extra special by the PTO purchasing Cat in the Hat pencils and ABC cookie treats for every student. Back in the classroom while eating their ABC cookies, Mrs. Wolfe’s 5th grade class was able to spell a total of 257 words as they compiled a list on the board. A day of fun and learning was had by all! We look forward to next year’s Read Across America which will be celebrated on Monday, March 3rd.
