Marcia Masters Housel

Marcia Masters Housel of Harford, PA passed in peace March 6, 2013, at her Tingley Lake home, exactly as she wished. Born in Kingsley, PA, August 20, 1939 to Richard S. and Eloise (Williams) Masters, who recently celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary, Marcia was predeceased by her son, Brian R. Housel, and father-in-law, Clayton Housel. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Gary C. Housel, son Robert (Jennifer) Housel, daughter Nancy Housel Abashian (David Vose), and daughter-in-law Aileen Gariepy, M.D. (Timothy Nanzer). She spent many days loving, teaching, encouraging, and enjoying the company of her grandchildren, Anna and Jacob Housel, Peter and Elizabeth “Libby” Abashian, and Hannah, Haydn and Snowdon Vose. Marcia is also survived by her sisters, Joyce (Richard) Berish, Betsy (Jonathan) Blattmachr, Jacquie (Ronald) Phillips, her brother, Richard W. (Shirley) Masters, sisters-in-law Janet (Joseph, decd.), George and Lois Housel, mother-in-law, Mildred Housel, and many nieces and nephews.

Marcia graduated in 1957 from Harford High School, Harford, PA. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Hanover College, Hanover, IN in 1961. While at Hanover she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority through which she maintained many valued friendships with her sisters over the years.

Marcia began her career as a science teacher in Lyndonville, NY, where she met her husband as a fire siren sounded, their curiosity bringing them together in the street. They were married at her parents’ home in 1962. She continued her career as a highly sought-after substitute teacher, often assuming long-term assignments in music and history until she retired in 1999.

She was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church, Lyndonville, NY, where she fearlessly assumed many roles including Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Administrative Council, Women’s Society and coordinator of many church dinners; but it was her love of music that led to her proudest achievement as the director of the choir for 34 years.

A talented singer, she was a charter member and director of the Ontario Shores Chapter of “Sweet Adelines”, a women’s barbershop chorus, as well as a longtime member of a barbershop quartet that often performed throughout the community.

A life-long Girl Scout, camp counselor and troop leader, she inspired many young women—most recently her granddaughter, who joined her in Washington, D.C. to celebrate 100 years of Scouting along with 300,000 other Girl Scouts.

Through the American Field Service program, Marcia opened her home to many international students whom she considered to be her children. Through Charlotte Knudsen, Saskia “Fina” Rose, and Satoshi Suzuki, she was able to explore Denmark, Germany, and Japan respectively. She had an affinity for travel and continued her adventures by visiting England, Hong Kong, Vietnam, China, Mexico, Sweden, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Estonia, and the Galapagos Islands.

Marcia and Gary moved to the house she designed and they built together at Tingley Lake in 1999. She returned to her childhood church, the First Congregational Church in Harford, where she again assumed a leadership role. She was President of the Missionary Society, Chairman of Deacons, Chairman of Administrative Council, and a Willing Worker.

She loved reading and spending time with friends over coffee at her kitchen table. She loved sharing her home and planning parties, especially at Tingley Lake—the bigger the better. She loved her family, taking every opportunity to bring them together and celebrate life at every turn, shepherding them through good and bad times. She leaves behind a legacy of service to others, a genuinely caring and compassionate human nature, a natural curiosity and sense of adventure, and a fearless tenacity that helped her to achieve a life full of joy and satisfaction.

A memorial service was held on Saturday March 16, 2013 at First Congregational Church, 5016 Creek Road, Harford, PA 18823.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church Building Fund,  Box 217, Harford, PA, 18823.
