Eating A Better Breakfast

Hi, it’s Susquehanna County Dairy Princess Callie Curley here with some yummy breakfast tips and treats.

While the hustle and bustle of a new school year is most certainly exciting, it can leave kids and parents feeling worn down by the end of the day…and of course, very hungry! One easy way to keep the cravings at bay is to start the day right: with a delicious, nutritious breakfast and a few extra minutes with family.

Begin the day by sitting down at the table for a dairy-rich and of course, delicious meal before starting your busy days. Better doesn’t have to mean difficult. With the abundance of ready-to-make and ready-to-eat breakfast foods like frozen waffles and French toast sticks, adding that homemade feel is easy; just top them with fresh fruits, real butter, and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

And if waffles aren’t your favorite, there are many other choices available. Try chopping up fruits such as bananas, apples, pears, and cantaloupe and sprinkling with lemon juice before refrigerating overnight and enjoying in the morning or add a yummy flair to your scrambled eggs and try adding milk, a favorite shredded cheese and some vegetables like broccoli or mushrooms before cooking.

Although, traditionally people prefer “grab and go” foods for their weekday mornings and leave the sit down meals for the weekend and holidays, with just a little preparation and planning, homemade breakfasts like the ones listed above can be a snap no matter what your calendar has on it.

Eating a better breakfast can make maintaining a healthy diet easy too. Did you know that the daily calcium requirement for kids ages 9-18 is 1300 milligrams? That’s 4-5 glasses of milk in just one day; a lot to expect when milk is only consumed with lunch and dinner. By shelving the toaster pastries and turning breakfast into an actual meal you are helping your kids to reach their calcium goals…and they may not even realize it!

Speakers at the ribbon cutting included Bartorillo, Joe Marabito of Leathestocking, state Rep. Tina Pickett and state Sen. Gene Yaw. The 27.7 mile ride was held at Rothrock State Forest, Huntington, Mifflin and Centre Counties. It takes place on well-marked trails at a timed pace, with judges observing the ride and inspecting the horses both before and after the competition. The 4 hour ride took place in two sections with a mandatory stop time in the middle. It’s not a race against time competition, scoring is based on the overall condition of the horse with points deducted for any changes in the horse’s condition during the ride. This type of trail ride takes over six weeks to prepare your horse for this endurance event.

Kelly is the daughter of Dennis and Connie Oliver and is in the 9th grade at Elk Lake Jr./Sr. High School She is a member of the Blue Ribbon Driven 4-H Club. At the District IV Horse Show, Kelly qualified for the State 4-H Horse Show in Trail Class; which will be held in Harrisburg in October.
