Conservation District Fall Fish Sale
Submitted by Robert Fearnley
Do you dream of hard fighting game fish; or maybe hot action on the ice; or how about a platter of golden fish fillets. You can get your start on these dreams by purchasing stocking size fish at the Susquehanna County Conservation District’s fall fish sale on October 21st. The District will have four species of fish available, three of which are sold only in the fall sale. Walleyes, yellow perch, black crappies and fathead minnows will be delivered to the District office at 88 Chenango Street in Montrose in plastic containers with oxygen added so they may be transported directly to your pond or lake.
Walleye are a top rung predator capable of controlling over populated panfish species. They will survive in ponds over 10 feet deep but probably will not spawn in most ponds. Walleyes can reach 8 pounds in weight and can be stocked up to 50 fingerlings to acre.
Yellow perch are a popular panfish that do well in local ponds and lakes. Perch bite well under the ice making them very popular with winter fishermen. They spawn very well in ponds in the early spring. Black crappies also known as calico bass bite best in the spring and make fillets for that May or June fish fry. Fathead minnows will be sold by the pound and are valuable forage fish for the other 3 species especially for fall stockings. If you are interested in ordering these fish contact the Conservation District at 570-278-4600 ext 280 or 281 or stop by the office at 88 Chenango Street.

Forest Land Owners Plan Weekend Bus Trip
Submitted by Robert Wagner
The 2012 Susquehanna County Forest Land Owners Association (SCFLOA) annual Columbus Day weekend fall bus tour heads to south central New York. Forestry, Native American history and a working museum highlight this year’s bus tour.
SCFLOA President Jim James states “…with Mother Nature’s cooperation the New York state hardwood forests will have great fall colors. Our planned activities include outstanding educational and recreational opportunities.“
The first stop, as we leaf peep our way up Interstate 88, will be at "The Pine Lake Environmental Center" which is part of Hartwick College, near Oneonta. The Pine Lake Environmental Center is a 920 acre living forest laboratory, recreation area, and an ecologically diverse land. Plant, animal, insect and bird species abound along with a variety of aquatic life in the streams, marsh and lake. There is a high altitude bog at Mud Pond. We will be able to make use of the walking and hiking trails as we enjoy the fall splendor.
Lunch will be the next order of business in Oneonta. (Lunch is not included in the tour price.)
The second stop on the tour takes us to Hansford Mills near East Meredith. This has been a mill site since 1846, it was a working mill until it closed in 1967. It was re-opened later that year as a museum. It is one of the last 19th century mills to survive intact, earning it a place on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Hansford Mills present many different stories, perspectives and experiences. By bringing to life historic choices and processes, Hansford Mills can offer insights about the past. The visit to this working museum has been recommended by SCFLOA Board of Director member Doug Gunn of the New Milford area.
Our final stop, further northeast on Interstate 88, will be at the Iroquois Museum at Howes Caverns. The museum building is shaped as a longhouse to recall the traditional Iroquois longhouse made out of elm bark. The museum has a 45 acre Nature park, with short and long trails. The Iroquois are famous in as the most powerful and influential Native Americans in Eastern North America. A visit to this museum was recommended by longtime Bureau of Forestry Service Forester, now retired, and one of SCFLOA's past presidents Jim Kessler.
On the way home, we will be stopping for dinner (cost not included in tour price) at Brooks Bar-B-Que in Oneonta.
The tour will leave the parking lot behind the County Office Building in Montrose promptly at 8 am. on Saturday, October 6. Reservations for this enjoyable trip must be made by October 1, 2012. If you want to go on the bus tour please call Stuart Slocum at 756-2497. (Toilet facilities will be available on the bus, and the Association will provide complimentary cold drinks.)
