Implemented Forestry Practices Field Day

A Forestry & Wildlife Educational Field Day will be held on Saturday July 28, 2012.This event will be held at the managed woodland of Christy Ann Strange. Her woods are located a half mile east of the intersection of Route 170 and the Beech Grove Road near Aldenville. The program will start sharply at 1:30pm. There will be guided tours to the different stations to observe the different forestry and wildlife habitat management practices completed on Strange’s property.

"This is a Forestry Field Day you surely do not want to miss!" explains Craig Olver with Forest Care LLC. Mr. Olver is a Wayne county resident and retired forester from the Wayne Conservation District with 30+ years experience in helping people to manage private woodlands.

The first stop will be at a 175 feet wetland crossing built by Chaz Augello Excavating. This was an old farm road used by work horses and small farm tractors. This road was built to carry 25 ton log trucks. Paul Reining, Forest Specialist with the Wayne Conservation District, will explain how wetlands crossings were installed using five 35 feet long culverts, 330 feet of road fabric, and number 4 stone, 22 inches thick to build this crossing. "No small feat to build this log truck road" assures Consulting Forester Craig Olver. We had to get a driveway permit and a wetland crossing GP # 7. An additional 600 feet of road will be built by pulling in old stone walls from sides of this farm road to give the base needed to carry the log trucks.

The second stop will be to inspect the 9 acres of Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) that was completed this past winter. A Service Forester from the DCNR Bureau of Forestry will explain TSI, the weeding of a woods garden. Diseased, deformed and defective trees were cut down, plus a general thinning of this dense pole size northern hardwood forest. This work released the higher quality hardwoods from competition for moisture, nutrients and sunlight. The results are healthier and faster growing trees.

Another stop on the guided tour will be to see the work done to control invasive plants of Multi Flora Rose and Red Barberry. Strange’s woods were completely covered with these plants. They restricted any forest management, reforestation and access to her woods. These plants were sprayed in August 2011 with the herbicide Accord using a backpack mist blower. Forest owners will be impressed to see the results.

The Susquehanna Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) will be talking about gas pipline seedings, wildlife habitat management of the new seeding areas and what you can do to help manage these new seedings. According to Bob Wagner, Branch Secretary. "Our QDMA branch has recently had a dvd produced that explains how the landowners, with pipeline on their properties, can apply quality habitat management practices to manage and improve the seedings that are being planted on the pipelines."

If the health of your woods is important to you, plan to attend this Forestry Field Day at Christy Strange’s woods, (1262 Beech Grove Road, Prompton, PA 18456) on Saturday, July 28. The program is sponsored by the Wayne-Lackawanna Forest Landowners Association, the Wayne Conservation District, DCNR Bureau of Forestry, Delaware Highlands Conservancy, and Forest Care LLC.
