Sharon Stockholm, retired kindergarten teacher from the Choconut Valley Elementary School in the Montrose Area School District, recently received a $700.00 enrichment grant. She was one of ten members from Pennsylvania who proudly accepted an enrichment grant during the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Alpha Alpha State at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College. Since her initiation in 1980, Sharon has been an active member of the Beta Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, whose membership is composed of women educators from Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties. This is Sharon’s second enrichment grant and there were six other chapter members in attendance at the convention for the presentation.

Beta Rho Chapter member Sharon Stockholm (pictured) received an enrichment grant at the Alpha Alpha State Convention of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in State College. She will use the grant to take beginner watercolor painting classes in St. Croix, Virgin Island during her winter stay there. She is holding a red rose which symbolizes friendship, loyalty, and helpfulness, the work of each for all in the Society.
Sharon’s grant will be used for watercolor painting classes in St. Croix where she and her husband spend the winter months. In her application letter, she stated that “the island of Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgins Islands is blessed with many talented artists. Their enthusiasm and camaraderie inspired me to become interested in watercolor painting. I would like to enroll in a beginners’ class under the instruction of Jane Akin.” Jane has been painting her beloved St. Croix since moving there in 1998. She does house portrait commissions, but tropical flowers are her very favorite subjects. Like Georgia O'Keefe, Jane paints the flowers larger than life. This is where her mastery of watercolor really shows its spontaneity--mingling colors, "glazing" one over another, creating luminosity, allowing the pigment to "bloom," and creating texture with salt or dry brush.
A goal of Sharon’s, once she gains the basics of watercolor painting, is to join “The Palletteers of Saint Croix” a fun-loving group of serious painters who meet weekly to share the beauty of Saint Croix and the challenge of painting Plein Air. The Palleteers are a community conscious fellowship that provides art work for various charities on the island.
In addition to receiving the grant, Sharon also participated in activities throughout the convention weekend and performed as a member of the State Chorus.
One of the seven purposes of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is to endow scholarships and enrichment grants to its members to promote personal and professional growth and excellence in education. The Society is composed of key women teachers in 17 countries throughout Europe, Canada, Latin America, and the United States and represents more than 100,000 of the world’s most respected women educators.
