Cancer Support Group Formed

Cancer, as we are all well aware, is a ferocious animal, with gnarled teeth that inflict pain and suffering on people regardless of age, sex, race or station in life. Just ask Oakland Borough Resident Paulette Towner.. She is waging a constant battle since being diagnosed with ”Multiple Myeloma”. Even though she has made some strides, Paulette must visit her Doctor every three months to determine if chemotherapy should begin. With her ongoing battle has come a realization that our area needs a cancer support group. A group for discussion, sharing of similar problems that, perhaps, have you feeling like you’re the only one in the fight. Helpful hints such as always carrying an updated list of medications, possible allergies and doctors which could save precious minutes in an emergency situation will also be offered.

After discussing this idea with several people, including her devoted cheerleader and supporter, husband Nelson, the Susquehanna Cancer Support Group was formed. This group is not only for those who have been diagnosed, but, also for Caregivers, those who have conquered the dreaded disease and individuals who have lost someone near and dear to them. It is said problems are lessened when shared and this is part of the group’s formation. As Paulette so aptly stated, “We’re all in the same battle—patient, caregiver, friends and family alike, and we need to stick together and stay strong for each other while knowing that you are not alone.” The S.C.S.G. will meet on the third Tuesday of every month, with the next meeting scheduled for June 19th at 7:00 P.M. The Susquehanna United Methodist Church, located on Main Street in Susquehanna has graciously offered their facilities for the gatherings. There is no fee to attend, just a listening ear, a caring heart and the warmth of an extended hand of friendship. Light refreshments will be served. Paulette and Nelson hope you will join them at next month’s meeting and if you have questions or concerns, they may be reached by calling 570-863-4809 or email them at: ntowner@echoes.net

Please plan to join us and bring a friend. Hope to see you there!
